1047 (Part 1/10 series) Why Sanskrit Vyasa Mahabhagavata, 7th Canto has not mentioned "Ayodhya" as a place of pilgrimage?

Clarfication: Primarily, I am a student of History, having completed my PG after my retirement from Banking Profession. I greatly appreciate our mythologies and scriptures. At the sametime, I feel that there is a need for Indians to become truth seekers instead of continuing as blind believers throughout their lives. I believe that Valmiki Ramayana has many components of history, which can be picked up after eliminating elements of fantasy such as Pushpaka Aircraft. In the same way, Vyasa Mahabharata and Vyasa Mahabhagavata seem to have many components of history, which can help us in making comparisons of one Century with another Century, and arrive at features of evolution of Indian Culture, such as places of pilgrimage. AyOdhya (also called sAkEt etc.) the birth place of Lord Shri Rama is one place which is hidden under the Earthy Mounds of Archaeological Sites. The AyOdhya may be the Phyzabad Ayodhya in U.P., or some other place in Bihar, Jharkhand.

VyAsa Mahabhagavata Sanskrit Language, 7th Canto (saptama skantha), Verses 30 to 33.

To save my labor, I am giving below the English Translation of the above verses, courtesy: Late Shrila Prabhupada of Harekrishna Movement

saramsi—lakes; pushkara-Adini—such as Pushkara; kshetrANi—sacred places (like Kurukshetra, GayAkshetra and JagannAtha Puri); arha—for worshipable, saintly persons; ASritAni—places of shelter; uta—celebrated; kurukshetram—a particular sacred place (dharma-kshetra); gaya-Sirau—the place known as GayA, where GayAsura took shelter of the lotus feet of Lord VishNu; prayAgau—Allahabad, at the confluence of the two sacred rivers Ganges and YamunA; pulaha-ASramau—the residence of Pulaha Muni; naimisham—the place known as NaimishAraNya (near Lucknow); phAlgunam—the place where the PhAlgu River flows; setuu—Setubandha, where Lord RAmacandra constructed a bridge between India and LaìkA; prabhAsau—PrabhAsakshetra; atha—as well as; kuSa-sthali—DvAravati, or DvArakA; vArANasi—Benares; madhu-puri—MathurA; pampA—a place where there is a lake called PampA; bindu-sarau—the place where Bindu-sarovara is situated; tathA—there; nArAyaNa-ASramau—known as BadarikASrama; nandA—the place where the NandA River flows; sitA-rAma—of Lord RAmacandra and mother SitA; ASrama-Adayau—places of shelter like CitrakUTa; sarve—all (such places); kulAcalAu—hilly tracts of land; rAjan—O King; mahendra—known as Mahendra; malaya-Adayau—and others, like MalayAcala; ete—all of them; puNya-tamAu—extremely sacred; deSAu—places; hareu—of GOD ; arca-ASritAu—places where the Deity of RAdhA-KrishNa is worshiped (such as big American cities like New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco, and European cities like London and Paris, or wherever there are centers of KrishNa consciousness); ca—as well as; ye—those which; etAn deSAn—all these countries; nisheveta—should worship or visit; Sreyau-kAmau—one who desires auspiciousness; hi—indeed; abhikshNaSau—again and again; dharmau—religious activities; hi—from which; atra—in these places; ihitau—performed; pumsAm—of the persons; sahasra-adhi—more than a thousand times; phala-udayau—effective.

The sacred lakes like Pushkara and places where saintly persons live, like Kurukshetra, GayA, PrayAga, PulahASrama, NaimishAraNya, the banks of the PhAlgu River, Setubandha, PrabhAsa, DvArakA, VArANasi, MathurA, PampA, Bindu-sarovara, BadarikASrama [NArAyaNASrama], the places where the NandA River flows, the places where Lord RAmacandra and mother SitA took shelter, such as CitrakUTa, and also the hilly tracts of land known as Mahendra and Malaya—all of these are to be considered most pious and sacred. Similarly, places outside India where there are centers of the KrishNa consciousness movement and where RAdhA-KrishNa Deities are worshiped must all be visited and worshiped by those who want to be spiritually advanced. One who intends to advance in spiritual life may visit all these places and perform ritualistic ceremonies to get results a thousand times better than the results of the same activities performed in any other place.

In these verses and in verse twenty-nine, stress is given to one point: harer arcASritAS ca ye or harer arcA. In other words, any place where the Deity of GOD is worshiped by devotees is most significant. The KrishNa consciousness movement is giving the population of the entire world a chance to take advantage of KrishNa consciousness through the ISKCON centers, where one may perform Deity worship and chant the Hare KrishNa mahA-mantra and in this way obtain results with effectiveness increased a thousand times. This constitutes the best welfare activity for human society. This was Sri Caitanya MahAprabhu's mission as it was predicted by Him in the Caitanya-bhAgavata (Antya 4.126):

prithivite Ache yata nagarAdi-grAma
sarvatra pracAra haibe mora nAma

Sri Caitanya MahAprabhu wanted the Hare KrishNa movement, with installed Deities, to spread to every village and town in the world, so that everyone in the world might take advantage of this movement and become all-auspicious in spiritual life. Without spiritual life, nothing is auspicious. MoghASA mogha-karmANo mogha gnAnA vicetasau (Bg. 9.12). No one can become successful in fruitive activities or speculative knowledge without being KrishNa conscious. As recommended in the SAstras, everyone should be very eagerly interested in taking part in the KrishNa consciousness movement and understanding the value of spiritual life.

I am not a supporter or hater of Harekrishna Movement.

ybrao-a-donkey's personal view, not intended to be imposed on others

In the above list of places of pilgrimages, we do not find the name of Ayodhya or the Birth place of Shri Rama. There is a reference to Sita Rama Ashrama (Hermitage of Sita, Rama and Lakshmana during their Forest Exile). Shrila Prabhudasa has also mentioned above ChitrakooTa which is on the boundary of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. But these three verses, why they have ignored Ayodhya?

At the time of Evolution of Vyasa Mahabhagavata as a scripture i.e. probably the Gupta Period i.e.the 3rd & 4th Centuries A.D., which is also considered as a Golden Age for India. Were Chandra Gupta-I, Samudra Gupta, Chandra Gupta-2 aware of the Existence of Ayodhya as the Birth place of Shrirama and as a place of pilgrimage?

The context in which the Vyasa Mahabharata referred to Andhras (Telugu speaking people might have perhaps been called Andhras in those days), we are going to discuss shortly.

570 Did truthful, forbearing, patient, discriminating, dispassionate, God devotee YudhishThira gamble betting his employees or his slaves?

What sort of man are you? Of all the incidents of Yudhisthira's life, you remember only his seeing hell. You don't remember his truthfulness, his forbearance, his patience, his discrimination, his dispassion, his devotion to God.' I was about to say many more things, when Hriday stopped my mouth. After a little while Jatindra left the place, saying he had some other business to attend to. It isn't good to be clever. The crow is very clever, but it eats others filth.'
... At my blog No.Click to go to http://sankaracharyayb.blogspot.com/search/label/008', Shri Ravi commented as under (part of the comment is quoted below) citing what Shri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa said to one of his devotees by name Jatin :--

This made me very angry. I said to him: 'What sort of man are you? Of all the incidents of Yudhisthira's life, you remember only his seeing hell. You don't remember his truthfulness, his forbearance, his patience, his discrimination, his dispassion, his devotion to God.' I was about to say many more things, when Hriday stopped my mouth.

After a little while Jatindra left the place, saying he had some other business to attend to.

2.It isn't good to be clever. The crow is very clever, but it eats others filth.'

3.The right intelligence is that through which one attains God; but the intelligence that enables one to become a deputy magistrate or a lawyer, or to acquire a house, is a mean intelligence. It is like thin and watery curd, which merely soaks flattened rice but does not add any flavour to it. It is not like thick, superior curd. But the intelligence through which one attains God is like thick curd." ...

Just as people are afraid of exploring and speaking truth about Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, and Swami Vivekananda, people are equally afraid of thinking or exploring about YudhishThira (dharma rAja). Shri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa in the above quote, is very convinced about the discriminative abilities of Yudhishthira. This is probably because his convictions are based on anecdotes he heard from preachers and discoursers (ప్రవచనకర్తలు प्रवचनकार). We shall see from Vyasa's Sanskrit Mahabharata:-
Vyasa MahabhArata , Sabha Parva (Book 2 dealing with Assemblies), Chapter 85 (deals with the betting and gambling process between YudhishThira and Sakuni), verses 17 to 19.

ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF THE ABOVE SANSKRIT VERSES BY KISHORE MOHAN GANGULY, slightly modified by me.
Yudhishthira said,--‴I have a hundred thousand serving-girls, all young, and decked with golden bracelets on their wrists and upper arms, and with coins round their necks and other ornaments, adorned with costly garlands and attired in rich robes, daubed with the sandal paste, wearing jewels and gold, and well-skilled in 64 arts, especially versed in dancing and singing, and who wait upon and serve at my command the celestials, the Snataka Brahmanas, and kings. With this wealth, I will stake with you !‴

How did 11th Century CE Telugu translator of Mahabharata, the great Nannaya mahAkavi handled this scene?

Vyasa, in Chapter 85 of Book 2 (Sabha parvam, Adhyayam 85) used 40 verses to describe how betting between Yudhishthira and Sakuni. Vyasa maintained a depictive drama. Nannaya, disposed off the whole process in seven lines of prose given above. Nannaya wrote yOshita sahasrambulu which means 1000 girls. Vyasa's verse 2-85-18 mentions 100,000 girls. Vyasa described them as apart from being decorated, and adorned, as experts in 64 arts. Nannaya condensed everything. Nannaya used one attribute to describe Yudhishthira: "baddha matsarunDu" = "one who is bound by envy". In my humble opinion, Nannaya should have either adhered to original of Vyasa or alternatively used the adjective "durASA baddhunDu" = "one who is bound by greed" which aptly describes YudhishThira's State of Mind at that time. Anyway these are all minor abherrations. It will be suffice to say that those who want to explore probable facts and truths should analyse Vyasa Mahabharata instead of depending on Indian Language translations.

Why I am writing this is, All India Radio (AkASa vANi), Vijayawada Station, is every Friday morning at 9.30 broadcasting a Mahabharata analysis program based on Telugu Bharatam. Better thing ought to have been: comparing both Vyasa and Andhra Mahabharatas.

Back to wreckless betting of 100,000 girls made by Yudhishthira: As ybrao-a-donkey my mind thinks on behalf of the working class. Okay, let Yudhishthira bet himself, his own brothers including his step-brothers, their common wife. We shall concede his right for the time being. But does Yudhishthira have a right to gamble with the lives of servant girls? Are they slaves? Are they bettable commodities?

Now, our Great Preacher Ramakrishna Paramahamsa says that Yudhishthira's truthfulness, his forbearance, his patience, his discrimination, his dispassion, his devotion to God were not seen by the visitor Hriday or Jatin.

This is not the sole instance of Yudhishthira lacking discriminating abilities, particularly when he is caught by covetousness a la Dhritarashtra. These negative instances outnumber the instances where Yudhishthira acted with equanimity and justice. One such rare positive instance is Yaksha prasnalu (Yaksha's Questions) episode in the Book of Forests (Aranya Parvam). These yaksha prasnalu were already dealt with in our blog post No. 153. 553 Did YudhishThira's (dharmarAja's) aSvamEdha sacrificial animals include women and bulls?

People know that, during Asvametha sacrifice, a Royal horse is sent out across the country, inviting challengers to the Emperor's authority to bind the horse and be vanquished by the accompanying King's forces, or alternatively recognise and submit to the King's authority by worshipping the horse and giving gifts to the King. Few people know that not only the horse is sacrificed after its return to the Capital, apart from hundred of other animals, fishes and birds, tied to gold sacrificial posts called "yUpa sthambhAs". Bulls were also a part of the sacrificial animals in Yudhishthira's asvamEtha. What has now astonished this blog writer is, there is one verse in Mahabharata aSvamEtha parva (Book 14), which indicates that women might have been sacrificed, in addition to animals, birds and fishes.

Though there is no absolute proof, a verse in VyAsa Mahabharata in Sanskrit language, gives rise to some suspicion.

Context: Mahabharata war was over. YudhishThira was worried by killing kith and kin, he was polluted by sins. Vyasa advised him to perform ASvamEtha sacrifice. The above verses are a part of the sacrificial arrangements.

I am not competent to translate these verses into English. We shall see the translation of Kishore Mohan Ganguli's English translation of Vyasa's Mahabharata. It was published around in 1901. The importance of the Ganguli's translation is : It tries to be very faithful to the original verses in its purport. It is almost accurate word to word.

"...Those best of kings, came to the Horse-sacrifice of the Kuru monarch for doing what was agreeable to him. And they brought many gems with them and many female slaves and horses and weapons. ..."

...

"...Many sacrificial stakes also were set up, made, according to the directions of the scriptures of wood, and adorned with gold. Endued with great effulgence, these were duly planted and dedicated (with scriptural Mantras).

The king saw all animals, again, which belong to land and all those which belong to water, collected there on the occasion. And they also beheld many kine and many buffaloes and many old women, and many aquatic animals, many beasts of prey and many species of birds, and many specimens of viviparous and oviparous creatures, and many that are filth-born, and many belonging to the vegetable kingdom, and many animals and plants that live or grow on mountains. Beholding the sacrificial compound thus adorned with animals and kine and corn, the invited kings became filled with wonder. ..."

ybrao-a-donkey's-humble comments.
It may be observed that Shri Kishore Mohan Ganguli had translated the word "manIshi" as "old women".

These old women, who were tied to the sacrificial posts, might have been the slave women brought as gifts by the Kings who were paying tributes to Yudhishthira.

By bathing in some sacred river, when a person get fruits of 10 horse sacrifices, why all this bloodshed?

See the adjective used by Vyasa in 14-89-37. "KauntEyasya mahAtmanaha".

543 Part 2 of Godavari River Pushkaralu Festival

At present pushkara River worship, ancestor worship, family-bathing Pushkara festival is going on in South India, located at about 17 degrees North Latitude, and 83 degrees East Longitude, in Rajahmundry City, Kovvur, Narsapur Towns in Residual Andhra Pradesh, Basara, Dharmapuri, Kaleswaram in Telangana. Continuation of Post No. 537. Click to go there, if you wish

It is good that tradition is respected, Rivers are reverred, Ancestors are worshipped. When compared to whiling away time in pubs with binges of gins and vodkas, the time spent on a River front, we can always treat as better-spent.

At the same time, we should not expect exaggerated results from such activities. Priests, to maximise their income (It is pure Classical Smithsonian Economics!) have a tendency to magnify perceived results beyond all reasonable proportions.

The trigger for this particular blog post has come from a promise made by a T.V. preacher on Bhakti TV Channel on 10th July 2015, at about 6 pm, that those who bathe in Godavari River during pushkaram festival, will get benefits of 100,000 aSvamEthA yAgAs (horse-sacrifices). Unfortunately, I could view the TV only for five minutes. During those five minutes, I could not hear the source scripture of the 100,000 horse-sacrifices. He might have quoted it as some skAndha purANa.

Skandha purANa seems to contain a large number of interpolations made by temple authorities and priests at the instance of the authorities, to suit their money-making needs or their rhetoric needs of mesmerising people with false beliefs and keeping them under ecclesiastical control.

REQUEST TO READERS: I do not intend to hurt the feelings of any person or group of persons. I am not a Christian Missionary or any other missionary, on the prowl to convert people. This is only an attempt at genuine self-criticism of the culture of this land.

Even VyAsa Mahabharata scripture also contains some (exaggerated or not Readers have to decide) promises of benefits of horse-sacrifices, for pious activities like bathing, charities, pilgrimages.

We shall see the horse-sacrifice benefit promise from Mahabharata scripture.

From Andhra Mahabharata, Volume 3, Chapter 2, Prose 278:--

Context in Mahabharata

Pandavas were in exile to forest, after losing their kingdom in games of dice with Kauravas aided by Sakuni. When they were in forest, Sage Narada visited them. YudhishThira worshipped Narada and pleased him. Narada asked Yudhishthira to choose a boon. Dharma Raja wanted his 'ethical duty doubts' , to be cleared by Sage Narada. Then Sage Narada narrated to him the benefits of pilgrimages and bathing in sacred places. Narada was quoting the list of the pilgrimages as advised by Sage Pulastya visited Grand Sire Bhishma PitAmaha. This list starts in verse No. 235 of the Chapter 3 of Volume of Forest (araNya Parva), and continues upto verse No. 287. Around 53 verses. Then Sage Narada advised Pandavas to take up pilgrimages.

Nannaya's Telugu translation to VyAsa's Sanskrit original is not word to word or sentence to sentence. Basics have been well served, but there are omissions and commissions, which might not have been deliberate. Full translation of VyAsa's verses I am not attempting as this blog post has already become lengthy, and has already been edited many times. I shall take up VyAsa's verses in a separate blog post in future.

At this juncture, one observation: In verse 3-83-34 marked in bold red, Vyasa is promising a benefit of sacrificing a cow "gavAm mEdham avApnOti". On the other hand, Nannaya promised benefit of ten horse-sacrifices. Vyasa has not said "ten horse-sacrifices". Nannaya mahAkavi is saying.

Of course, many of our TV viewers, and newspaper readers do not know the meaning or implications of horse-sacrifices or cow-sacrifices. I have, my self, not heard about a cow sacrifice. YudhishThira's AsvamEdha horse sacrifice in Book 15 of mahAbharata refers to bulls being bound to sacrificial stakes, but I have not heard of cows being directly sacrificed. (This will be taken up separately). Probably vyAsa might have meant sacrifice of a male-calf. (This will also be taken up separately).
aSva mEthAs (horse sacrifices) are sin-cleansing rituals commonly found in vEdas. Formal real aSva mEthA rituals were apparently reserved only to mythological kings and emperors, who used the sacrifices to prove their suzerainty by releasing a horse over the length and breadth of his empire, with an inscription fixed to its face asking those who wish to challenge the king's authority to stop it. If any challenger stops the horse, there will be a battle between the King's forces following the horses to protect it, and the challenger will be subdued. Finally, when the horse returns to the Capital completing its journey and proving King's supremacy, the horse will be used as a sacrificial animal. The horse will be slain and its pieces of fat and flesh, are thrown into a special sacrificial pire. When the fat burns, the result fumes are smelt by the King and his Queens, leading to a clean-up of their sins.

In Valmiki Ramayana we can find two more incidents. The Queen Kausalya was asked to sleep with horse for a night. During the sacrifice, she was asked to stab the horse three times with a gold knife. In Mahabharata, Yudhishthira, after the Kurukshetra war, to cleanse his sins arising from slaying of Bhishma, Drona and other elders, performed the Horse Sacrifice.

VEMANA MAHAKAVI ABOUT BATHING IN GODAVARI RIVER

A totally different view from VEmana poet, approx. 15th Century C.E., in his vEmana Satakam.

(We have to understand and interpret Vemana vis-a-vis his contemporary environment, his own personal likes and dislikes, and historical perspectives. We need not always agree with him. We can leave him aside, if we disagree with him. Readers can use their wisdom, to what extent they can positively or neutrally, or negatively evaluate his views).

A Muslim will not become a dAsari (a devotee of VishNu, belonging to dAsari caste), if he goes to Tirumala. A prostitute will not become a virtuous woman, if she goes to kASi (VaraNAsi, Banaras). A dog will not become a lion, if it goes to GodAvari River.

A simple gist we can get from the above Vemana's verse is, we should not expect undue benefits by immersing ourselves in Godavari River, as long as we do not change our mindsets and living ethics.
