775 (Part 1/10) of "Is yOga necessary for Indians or for the World?

World Yoga Day is being celebrated with great fanfare in India on June 21 (today is June 21, 2016), under the leadership of our Great Prime Minister, Hon. Narendra Modi, who is reported to have participated in a Group Yoga Demonstration in Chandigarh today. As a donkey, this ybrao-a-donkey, feels it his duty to record some of his views (these may sound absurd and wierd to this country, and this world), with no malice towards anybody. This presentation is in a simple, question-answer form.

Question: Make yoga a part of your life, just as mobile phone is now a part of your life. Make yoga too a part of your life. Thus, our beloved PM says. Are you doing yoga?

During the years 1970-73 when I was working in a Bank during day time, studying B.Com., at Viveka Vardhini Evening College, Jambagh-Putli Bowli, Hyderabad, after returning home at 9 pm from College, as a bachelor, I used to do cook my food, wash my clothes. While keeping a watch on the boiling rice, I used to practise some yoga, on the advice of my some very active R.S.S. friends. During the period I had some tummy from excess food. My RSS friends suggested that yoga was a solution for tummies. By that time, I was already an agnostic, and about 80% atheist, on the peripheries. My RSS friends thought that I could be brought back to Bhakti yOga (Path of Devotion) if I join the RSS, understand its philosophies, participate in their morning SAkhAs (morning assemblies of the RSS branches for exercises with sticks, caps, knickers, and patriotic singing). I attended some SAkhAs in Sudha Talkies Area of Old City. My RSS friends, also used to inquire from me whether I was practising yoga, advised by them. In order not to lie with them, and inasmuch as I had no time with my office work + evening college + travel to and from work place, I used to do some night yoga work between 9 pm and 11 pm. I did not learn anything from that half-hearted practice.

India does not need yoga. It is not clear why India wants to induce the world to accept Yoga for Universal demonstration.

QUESTION 2: Why doesn't INdia need yoga?

Answer: Indian Proletariat (Working Class) of the Centuries prior to the 21st Century, used to have sufficient physical exercise, as a part of "earning their livelihood". After working for eight to 14 hours in the agricultural field / factories / master's house / master's shop / plying rented autos for livelihood / jogging through the city to sell goods on one's own head-load vending basket / one's own vending-cart / one's own dungeon-like home where livelihood-work is carried on at home, etc. they do have little energy left to perform yoga or meditation. Yoga and Meditation will be only for filthy-rich fatty guys, who over-eat, then feel uneasy, and then want for a temporary change, a deviation from gyms , pubs etc.

This situation has started changing in the 21st Century India, when Two Wheeler and Four Wheeler Companies have started dumping their stocks, with the help of Hire-purchase-financiers. Today, people use mobile phones, instead of going to various places. They use two wheelers, three wheelers, and four wheelers even for as short a distance as 500 meters. They use motor cycles and cars to go to sport clubs and gyms, and spend their time there with or without physical exercise.

Question 3: When the whole world is embracing yoga with open arms, why are you sceptical about it?

Answer: The whole world is not accepting. It is pretending to be accepting. Reason: India is sitting on foreign exchange reserves of about $370 billion, with substantial power to purchase aircraft, aircraft carriers, bombs, cars, drones, euranium, electronics, guns, iphones-condemned, liquors, nuclear reactors-condemned variety, operating systems and proprietary software, petroleum, radars, submarines and what not? All these things can be palmed off to India. Just by saluting to Gita, and pretending to perform some yogic postures, all these things can be sold to India and Indians.

Question 4: And, how did India accumulate all these exchange reserves?

By allowing foreign institutional investors to invest in Indian Companies which own massive pieces of land suitable for commercial development. Both the Central and State Governments in India have been very very liberal in granting land to Corporates both Indian and foreign, at throwaway prices of as little as Rs. 1/- per acre, in the name of Special Economic Zones and Industrial Parks. Once India, exhausts all its land to Foreign Investors, and once India exhausts all its foreign exchange reserves, no foreign Head of State, or Head of Government will look at Bhagavad Gita or at Yoga.

Things would have been different had India gathered its foreign exchange reserves by exporting manufacturing goods. Real strength of a country whether Capitalist or Socialist, lies in its export capabilities.

Question 5: Do you mean to say that the glories of Indian Yoga, and Bhagavad Gita, being received well by the World, are all illusions.

Ans: If they are not illusions, they are delusions. It will be a Himalayan blunder to get hallucinations, about mirages becoming perennial rivers. Reason: Every country thinks of , and tries to safeguard its own interests. Prima facie, everything may seem rosy, when Mr. Narendra Modi and Mr. Xi Jinping (President of China), sit comfortably on a swing-cradle in Ahmedabad. But when the test of allowing India to become a permanent member of Security Council, or a member of NSG, Chinese President will show his real 'avtAr' (incarnation). It will place every obstacle in the path of India, notwithstanding the fact, that India helped the Communist China become the member of Security Council, replacing the traditional member Taiwan China. China forgets its own history.

There are about 10 further questions to be answered. I shall answer shortly.

529 Part 3 of Clarifications on atheism. yoga

World language English in Roman script:

The question "Does God really exist?" is thousands of years old.

Answer for this complex, disputed, ethereal, sticky, tricky, question lies in the definition of the word "God".

There are several threads of multi-twined-yarn, in this grand rope of the word "God".

The foremost two threads, we shall take up.

1. Question प्रश्न ప్రశ్న : Whether God as a "Super-human force exist?".

Answer जवाब జవాబు:   Human, has not as on date, conquered all the forces not only in this expansive universe, but also even on this congested earth. He-she (humans) are on the way of conquering nature (a component of the superhuman force, call it God or by any name). Probably they will succeed. People living in the 21st Century may not live to see it. Hence, it will become worthwhile to say that superhuman forces exist, and one of the attributes of God as a superhuman force holds good as on today. Once humans, with the help of science and technology conquer all the superhuman forces on Earth (conquering Universe comes later), this attribute of God as a superhuman force will have to pave way to something else.

Question प्रश्न ప్రశ్న : Whether God can punish us, reward us, save us?

Answer जवाब జవాబు: No proof of such capabilities or dispositions of God. On the other hand, proofs of a negative answer, we can get abundantly. Best very recent example: 23 people went from Vizianagaram in the Northern-most tip of Andhra Pradesh , about 700km far, to Tirumala situated in the southern most tip of Andhra Pradesh, with all faith and sincerity. The Head of the family was the owner of the vehicle, and he himself was driving it. Every one of them might have prayed to Lord Venkateswara with great devotion, with a hope that they will get optimum rewards, least punishments, and full safety.

But what happened? While returning, the vehicle fell from the bridge of the Dhawaleswaram Barrage into Godavari River, and 21 people perished. Only one boy survived.

Question प्रश्न ప్రశ్న: Is God pray-able? Is God worship-able? Is God feed-able? Is God wash-able and bath-able? Does God receive communications? Does God respond to such communications? Which language does God speak, or understand?  Does God have sex?  Why does n't God in some religions is called "He", "Father", and yet He does not have a wife, and the humans who are his sons, do not have a Mother?

Answer जवाब జవాబు: No proof of God's pray-ability. No proof of God's worship-ability. No proof of God's feed-ability. No proof of God's wash-ability and bath-ability. No proof of God's receiving communications. No proof of God's responding to communications.

Gods cannot hear or speak languages. Of course, preachers will, always say that God is omniscient and knows all languages. But the same preachers run the prayer houses, and most prayers are made in Latin, Arabic-Persian, and Sanskrit. Preachers seem to believe and propagate that God listens better and more, if prayed in Arabic or Latin or Sanskrit, and for that purpose, priests are engaged, paying hefty amounts.

Question प्रश्न ప్రశ్న:   What is the purpose of this blog post?

Answer जवाब జవాబు:   I felt that there is a need to clarify into our approaches and thinking. Atheism seems to concentrate more on proving and spreading the fact that there is no God. Suggested clarified approach: Although a God(dess) in the meaning of a superhuman force may exist (or may not exist), he-she does not exist in the meaning of a receiver of human feedings, kneelings, prayers, prostrations, salutes, and worships. It will be futile to pray/worship any force of Nature, Universe calling them as God(dess), whether using idols as tools, or without using tools, turning to a pulpit or a wall.

Question प्रश्न ప్రశ్న Can we apply this to sUrya namaskArs also?

Definitely. Sun is a very huge gaseous sphere. We may get energy, light from that gaseous body. Our survival itself, may depend on the sunlight and sun's rays, umpteen things like photo-synthesis. Yet we cannot call a gaseous average sized body in the cosmos, as God, personifying it. There is no need or question of prostrating before the gaseous star, imagining it to be a God by name "Sun".

As a form of physical exercise, sUrya namaskArs may be good. But the name sUrya namaskArs becomes irrational, whether such physical exercises are performed facing the Sun, or indoors.

However, to perform Surya namaskars simply as physical exercise or physical exercise + prayer to personified Sun God, can be left to individuals.  Better, if the State does not make it a controversial topic, by trying to impose it.    Nobody forces people to buy cell phones or download porn videos.   Yet millions of Indians and millions of people of the world do it, quite voluntarily, because they get some pleasure in it.  If they can find same kind of joy in doing Surya Namaskar's, it will be well and good.

Conclusion:  People's' Choices between Surya Namaskars and mobile porn essentially depend on hitam (what is good and secure for them) and priyam (what is liked by them- whether good or not).

527 Part 1 of questions concerning International Yoga Day

Part 1 of questions concerning International Yoga Day

Yoga is unnecessary for common people and their children.

It is a regretable thing that Central Government, under pressure from some Sadhus and Sants is trying to impose yOgA on children in schools. It is spending millions of Rupees for organising public congregations and displays of yoga.

Common people will ignore them anyway. They have no alternative also. Only exception will be those suffering from non-immediately-fatal diseases such as high BP (hypertension), low BP (hypotension), obesity, joint-pains etc. I have, today morning, heard a phone-in program conducted by All India Radio, Vijayawada. Most of the callers were inquiring about their diseases, and expecting from the program panelists, positive assurances that yoga will cure their ailments.

In their replies, panelists were doing some circus feats. They cannot, outrightly assure, that the ailments of the callers will be cured. As an escape route, for some people they suggested that yoga would benefit in long run. For some others, they suggested the callers to consult Ayurveda experts. To be on safe side, they were also insisting that yoga should be practised only under expert supervision. The overall impression, a person can get on listening to the program today (this program is to be heard several days/weeks to make sure that similar replies are being given, or whether there are any situational variences.), is the program will definitely create some employment / get extra business to Ayurvedic practitioners and Yoga experts.

While it is true, that modern medicine is, as on date, unable to finding lasting solutions for all our ailments, we must keep in mind that even Ayurveda and Yoga are also unable to find lasting solutions. Doctors, both of the modern medicine, and the alternative medicine (Ayurveda, Yoga) have an escape route. It is to blame the patient that (s)he failed to follow the prescribed regimen or failed to follow diet restrictions (in Ayurveda called 'pathyam), or that yoga has not been done regularly according to its principles. This may be only partially true.

SOME QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ABOUT YOGA

Has Yoga got anything to do with religion?

Internationally understood (World's) meaning of the word 'yOgA' is different from the philosophical or religious meaning of yOgA. The world has developed a practice of viewing yOgA only as AsanAs (physical exercise postures). We can safely believe that when UNO, to placate Indian sentiments, declared a World Yoga Day, it seems to have in its mind, the meaning only of "physical exercise postures". If we accept that meaning, as a global meaning of yOgA, there can be no occasion to object to it as something being imposed as an agenda of the majority religion India.

Preachers of religions born outside India, have a tendency to look at yOga with their 'suspicious eyes' as something to do with Hindu Religion. This suspicion can get cleared, if they can spend some time in practising yoga Asanas (physical exercise postures). They will themselves know that globally understood current usage of yOga is only in the meaning of 'physical exercise postures'. Swami Vivekananda, toured 1893 to 1900, during his two visits with some gap, toured UK and USA, and tried to sell Yoga to American and European Aristocratic citizens. Though standard yogic practices require abstentinence from liquors, non-vegetarian food, he did n't hesitate to teach yOga to drunken women in Holiday Resorts. Those who want to see proof for this, can refer to the Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda, in his Epistles (letters). Subsequent yOga teachers both of Indian origin, as well as non-Indian origin too have diluted yOga, to the level only of "physical exercise postures". Today, nothing is left of International Yoga, except the "physical exercise posturs". aSan-yOgA (food discipline), vihAra-yOgA (movement discipline) are as important as bhangima-yOgA (physical postures called Asanas). All these things do not have anything to do with religion.

The original dictionary meaning of the word 'yOgA' is 'yOking of the living-soul in a person' with the 'supreme soul i.e. God'. The words yOga, yOke have their origin from the Indo-European prototype language of Northern Europe (Skandinavia, Baltics) of the ancient Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Latvia, Lithuania, Old Prussia, Sudovia, Germany.

Hence preachers and practitioners of alien religions need not worry about the International Yoga Day, and spreading of Yoga across religions.

Question प्रश्न ప్రశ్న: If international yOga is just only a "physical exercise postures", is discipline not necessary?

Not necessary. Drunk-yogas, Non-veg yogas, pizza-yogas, hamburger-yogas, bacon-yogas, pork-yogas, beef-yogas, whisky-yogas, wine-yogas, ale-yogas, rum-yogas, gin-yogas, gay-yogas, lesbian-yogas, etc. may not give optimum results. For that matter, even non-yoga physical exercises such aerobics, gymnastics, dumbels, too require some discipline of alcohol, food, sex, sleep, gambling etc. In fact, in any theme of physical exercise, some amount of food and addiction discipline is essential. Then why blame international yOgA alone as something religious? It has nothing to do religion.

Question प्रश्न ప్రశ్న: Does n't yOga has anything to do with Hindu religion?

Answer जवाब జవాబు Earlier too, I have expressed a view that it will be erroneous to call Hinduism as a religion. There is no such religion called "Hinduism". None of the scriptures of India historically ever used the word "Hindu" anywhere. The word "sAnatana dharma" is also a claim made by some priests and preachers. The word 'sanAtana dharma' cannot represent the entire culture of India. If it is absolutely necessary to use the word "Hinduism" as a name for religion, it can only be called a "COMPOUND RELIGION" just like "COMPOUND FRUIT" a la, anona squimoza (SItA phal), or grapes (drAksha). Hinduism is like a garland of numerous flower-types such as jasmines, lavendar, roses, hibiscus. It is an admixture of dozens of discourses, discussions and philosophies which are divergent, sometimes even conflicting. It is the beauty of pluralim, the art of living together. If at all any blemish is to be painted on Hinduism, it is only about untouchability practised on the lowest castes. This untouchability practised in India, served as a tool for missionaries to make false propaganda, abuse Indian Gods and convert people to Islam and Christianity wrecklessly.

In post-1947 independent India, untouchability has nearly been abolished. It is now almost non-existent. But the same cannot be said of America and Europe. American and European History is full of atrocities committed by the slave traders, with the covert and overt support of missionaries. How does Europe treat the boat people from Africa, reaching European shores now? How does America, treat the non-white immigrants? Why blacks in America are being shot indiscriminately by American Police for flimsy reasons, and the American Courts acquit them on flimsy grounds? Why there are street demonstrations by blacks in American cities, to express resentment against the racialism of the Americans.

It will be better for India, not to try to spread yOgA abroad. If anybody abroad wants to learn yOga, it will be upto him-her to do that, without hullabaloo.

Question प्रश्न ప్రశ్న : Is patanjali's ashTAnga yoga, religious or not? Spreading ashTAnga yOgA is nothing but trying to convert people into Hinduism?

Answer जवाब జవాబు: Many people in India do not know about patanjali's ashTAnga yOga (eight-fold path). Those who know something about it, only pay lip-sympathy to it. Patanjali's eight-fold path is not easy to practice, is rarely practised. It has nothing to do with religion, God and prayers. Another reason, for low popularity of patanjali's eight-fold path is, that Indian kings (subsequently Muslim Sultans, PAdushAs, Governor's Generals, Vice Roys and Governors, rich merchants (sEThjis)), did not have the patience or time or inclination to patronise it or popularise it. They were interested in wine and women.

Question प्रश्न ప్రశ్న: Can we delienate among HaTha yOga, rAja yOgA, karma yOgA, and gnAna yOgA?

As against the global yOga which implies only physical exercise postures, haTHa yOgA has some superstious additional concepts. For example, it believes in cakrams (circular areas) in various parts of our body at various levels such as anus (mUlAdhAra cakram), penis-vulva (svAdhishTHAna cakram), naval (maNipUra cakram), chest (anAhata cakram), neck (viSuddha cakram), point between two eye-brows (AgnA cakram), scalp (sahasrAra cakram). Similarly, the practitioners believe in the existence of fourteen nerve-lines called 'nADIs' (chief among them are Sushumna, iDa, pingaLa). Then, there is a belief in the existence of an imaginary serpant (serpant-like nerve, which is coiled like a resting snake), in the mUlAdhAra cakra, called 'kunDalini'. Awakening this imaginary serpant, is called 'awakening kunDalini' and the art is called 'kunDalini vidya'. There is no solid proof of existence of all these things in reality. Some yOgA Gurus claim that they awakened their kunDalini , or that their gurus awakened kunDalini.

haTha yOgA thrives on belief and faith in preceptors. Anyway, haTha yOGA is not a part of the globally understood 'yOgA'. yOGA in its current sense means only postures called AsanAs. haTha yOgA includes not only the AsanAs, but also the above imaginary beliefs.

Hindi and Telugu versions will be added as early as possible.

421 Is a Guru really necessary for exploration of truth or self-realisation?

421 Is a Guru really necessary for exploration of truth or self-realisation?

Answer which occurs to ybrao a donkey's intellect

A Guru is only a helper.

A preceptor is not compulsory or obligatory.

Question: Then, in CVR Spiritual Telugu TV Channel, one Swamiji is telling that one cannot get self-realisation by reading books.

Answer: In his case (that particular Swamiji) it might have been true.  But, we cannot generalise it.

Books are also like Gurus.  They provide us information and sometimes impart us skills.  But one difference between manual gurus and book-gurus, according to my perception is, manual Gurus can be interactive, while books cannot be interactive, though authors of books can foresee some questions which may occur in reader's (truth seeker's) mind and answer them in advance.  In other words, Gurus can be dynamic, where books remain static.

Sometimes, Gurus themselves might not have experienced the realisation or bliss which they preach their disciples to explore and attain.  Then a duty beholds on Gurus, to tell the disciples that they themselves have not experienced the targeted apex.  They cannot hide behind vague statements like 'indefinable, infinite' etc.

What is the conclusion?  Neither the word of human preceptor (mAnav guru), nor the information in books are final.  Both are only aids and tools, with some strengths and some limitations.  Therefore, a duty lies on the truth-seeker to whet (examine on a testing stone) the veracity of statements made by Gurus as well as books, before forming firm beliefs.  However, there is nothing wrong in trying either Gurus or books.  Gurus of all religions have audacities and tendencies to declare that disciples must fall at their feet and learn.

We can write a thousand pages on this.  We shall try again on some other day.

Here Prahlada is telling clearly that a blind man cannot show way to another blind man.

Here, PrahlAda is very clearly telling that he has learnt on his own, beyond what has been taught by his teachers.   He also says that he has learnt the ultimate secret of all learnings.
