CPM leader Shyamal Chakrabarty on Friday claimed Swami
Vivekananda was being “misused” by the BJP and the RSS by projecting him
as a Hindutva icon.
Chakrabarty, who on Friday released a book
on Vivekananda, called Vivekananda – The Philosopher of Indian Renaissance, said: “Swami Vivekananda’s
philosophy has been grossly misused… this book
has spoken about the secular and progressive
image of Swamiji.”
Giving examples of Vivekananda’s writings in the book,
Chakrabarty said he was against Hindu extremism and a great believer in
all religions.
Condemning BJP’s campaign against cow slaughter, he added “Swamiji
was always against a ban on cow slaughter on religious lines. In ancient
Indian society, beef was eaten by Hindus too… even Swamiji used to take
beef.”
“Swamiji had spoken about the rule of Sudras, which means the rule of
the proletariat. So, those trying to put Swamiji and Hindutva in one
bracket are actually misinterpreting the great Indian philosopher,”
Chakrabarty said.

While it is true that RSS, BJP, Mr. Narendra Modi used Swami Vivekananda, to their advantage, what is now pertinent is, does Shaymal Chakraborty and his party CPIM want to use the same Swami Vivekananda, for their own resurrection?
Some unpalatable facts about Swami Vivekananda:
1. Swamiji claimed that he did not belong to India or Bengal, or Hinduism.
2. Swamiji adored yankee land (U.S.A.). Had he not suffered from severe diabetes, he might have chosen to settle down in U.S.A., during his second visit to that country. He considered India as a rotten corpse and jelly fish. He also loved native Indian rulers, and their boss Queen Victoria.
3. Swamiji did not like social reforms for India.
4. Swamiji's weeping for the poor is worth studying in depth. He seems to have taken it as a pretext for mobilising donations from abroad.
5. Swamiji believed in big-big people (in his own language).

The book released by Shyamal Chakraborty might have been titled as 'Vivekananda - Philosopher of Indian Renaissance'. In my humble view, it ought to have been titled as 'Vivekananda - Philosopher of Convenience'. To prove this for themselves, Readers will have to study his Complete Works in depth.
There is nothing really secular or progressive about Swamiji. The two Western tours of Swamiji were directed towards mobilising dollars and pounds, and spending them as per his likes. Building a monastery for Ramakrishna, running some orphanages, were all pretexts to justify mobilisation of funds.
The delusion of progressiveness of Swamiji's views can be seen from his letter to Ms. Christina Greenstidel, that they (Vivekananda and his -may be associates) sacrificed a goat during Durga Pooja and burst fireworks.
Swamiji's opposition to ban on cow-slaughter is understandable, because he supported beef consumption by Indians. His slogan of three Bs: bhagavadgita, biceps, beef is enough to prove it.
In my humble opinion, Swamiji should have campaigned not only for ban on cow-slaughter, but also ban on slaughter of domestic animals like camels, goats, particularly BUFFALOS. If cows can be given the status of 'mother', buffaloes also deserve it.
The real problem is CPM is afraid of losing minority votes, if it supports ban on slaughter of cows. CPM should shed this narrow political opportunism. It should take up the case of ban on slaughter of all cattle, particularly buffaloes, camels, cows, donkeys, goats etc.
Swamiji's views about rule by Sudras were retrogressive. After the annihilation of the so-called Aryan Kshatriya KIngs as a result of invasions by Greeks, Sakas, Hoons, Arabs, Turks and numerous other external raiders, the Hindu kings who ruled India upto 1947 were mostly Soodras only. It is not correct to say that Soodras as a caste, represented proletariat class. By the time of Swami Vivekananda, and even by now 2015, the castes which are considered as Soodras in India consist(ed) all types of people Maharajas, rajas, jamindars, jagirdars, big land owners, medium farmers, small and marginal farmers, agricultural laborers, rural artisans -- i.e. an admixture of bourgeoisie, petty-bourgeoisie, and the proletariat.
In India, soodras, particularly the landed soodras, considered themselves superior to the dalits, and participated in the oppression of dalits, along with other top castes of the society.
Hence we should not equate castes and classes. We may have to take occupations, their sizes, their money earning capabilities, the social respect they command , etc. into consideration before we can estimate true backwardness of a person, family , group.
Calling Swami Vivekananda a 'great philosopher' , is a vague term. The adjective 'great' itself is vague.
Left parties like CPM should not waste their time and energies while trying to capture power on the piggyback of Swami Vivekananda.
