1028 Shri Kancha Ilaiah seems to be traversing an inappropriate path, in his Quest for Social Justice

In Ancient and medieval history, the Caste System was extremely misused, and it has deprived many Classes of their legitimate dues. While it is true that we, in Independent India, cannot continue with such Oppressive System, in our Quest for Social Justice, we cannot create new problems for Indian Nation. To rectify one mistake, we cannot commit thousand other mistakes.

Shri Kancha Ilaiah's Lop-sided views cannot be replied to in just one blog post.

Shri Ilaiah's haste, and 'misdirected bullets on incorrect targets' will not help the cause of BCs or dalits in India, because stratification of the Indian Socio Economic Society of the 21st Century is different from the socio-economic Structures of the Indian Ancient and Medieval History.

He is directing his arrows and bullets to a particular caste i.e. 'banias (in Telugu: vysyas or kOmaTlu)'. Cornering of Wealth, some amounts of smuggling, blackmarketing, hoarding, etc. in the 21st Century India, are done by 'clever' persons, belonging to all Communities and Castes. Hence, he should have directed his arrows and bullets towards 'Traders, Industrialists' or generic terms like 'Capitalists, bourgeoisie' can be used.

Question: Will it be good to call 'Traders, Industrialists' etc 'Social Smugglers'?

Ans: Traders, Industrialists, Business persons also do some service. They bring Place Utility, Time Utility, Manner Utility, to the goods and services, and then pass on to the Consumers for a Price. In a Capitalist or Bourgeoisie system, it is not only Traders, Industrialists, Business Persons, and numerous others pursuing different activities contribute to the Progress of the country and the Society, and in return claim their Remuneration from the Country/Society. In a 10 point Scale or Ladder, we have different 'Classes' of Traders, Industrialists, Business Persons with vastly different Income and Wealth Profiles. Evens Shepherds and Cowherds are Business Persons. They do not keep/breed sheep and cows for Charity. For that matter in a Capitalist Society, nobody does anything for Charity, or out of philanthropy. If Mr. Bill Gates does or propagates some Charity or Philanthropy, we have to understand that he is just pretending.

Hence, the Evils which we see in the Socio-Economic Structure, and Activities of India, cannot be attributed to some X caste or Y Class (traders etc.). Any person/Institution/Organisation/Corporate/Entity can become and pursue Grabbing and Oppressive Activities, because the entire System is polluted and contaminated. For example, Cement Factories in and around Mella Cheruvu, Nalgonda District, Telangana State, occupy Government lands, Private lands of small farmers, Assigned Lands, and raise Fences to prevent People using even Common walking/cart track Paths. Which castes do these Cement Units belong to? It is not even their 'Greed'. It is their 'Survival Need'. If they cannot indulge in illegal activities, they cannot survive in Barbaric Capitalist Wild Human Forests, where humans themselves turn out to be Wild Animals.

At the same time, we cannot equate a cobbler or a potter at the bottom 10 rung of the Socio-economic ladder with the Ambanis, Advanis, Tatas and others at Rung 1. What Mr. Ilaiah has tried to do, is that only. A petty Merchant robbing SCs, BCS, Tribals in a very remote village of Telangana, cannot be compared to Ambanis and Adanis, simply because both of them are 'banias' or Vysyas or kOmaTlu or Settys by birth.

Because resources of the Indian Economy/Society are not unlimited, Nationalising and Redistributing the Entire Wealth of the Country/Nation on 'birth' basis or even 'occupation' basis will not solve the 21st Century Problems of India. Such approaches might have worked in by-gone Centuries, when population was low, desires, needs and aspirations were few. When Resources are meagre, entire Wealth and Income-sources of the Country are to be in the hands of the Nation. The Nation will have to guarantee Food, Clothing, Shelter, Old Age Security, some Vanilla Health Services, some Vanilla Education Services to everybody on EQUALITY BASIS. This is possible only under True Total Socialism (Not the Communism or Marxism of the China Brand).

Changing one's own Religion is like replacing one mill-stone in the neck with another mill-stone.

1. Like most other major World Religions, Buddhism also though preaches noble precepts, when it comes to practice, it tends to be as brutal as all other religions. Examples of proof: See how the SriLankan Government suppressed the freedoms of Sri Lankan Tamils, at the instance of some Sri Lankan Buddhist fanatics? See how the Myanmar (Burmah) Government is oppressing all the Rohingyas, at the instance of some Burmese Buddhist fanatics, simply some Rohingyas might have violently revolted against them? Where did the Gautama Buddha's Preachings of Tolerance go?

2. Buddhist Scriptures Tripitakas, contains Codes of Behaviors for Buddhist Monks and Nuns. It can be found from a careful study of these scriptures, that in treating female Nuns, they appear to be worse than Islam. I believe that Ms. Mayawati, as a politician, did not have time to study Buddhism in depth. Before ad-venturing into unknown waters, it will be better in her own interest, and also in the interest of this country, she needs to study Buddhism in depth, before embracing it.

3. If Ms. Mayawati feels that Hinduism (more precisely BJP's Pseudo Hindutva) is intolerant towards dalits, a better choice for her will be to go for 'irreligiousness / irreligiosity' or religion-less-ness. Then she will get rid of all the bonds and shackles of past, in one go.

4. BJP is not the sole Custodian of Hinduism in India. Even Ms. Mayawati, can also become a champion of Hinduism or Hindutva, as long as she does not become a fanatic.

5. Hinduism is not a religion founded by one prophet or person. Hinduism is an evolved culture, through thousands of years history, truth-investigative nature of its original inhabitants, additions-modifications-deletions made by invaders and migrants into the country. Out of the invading / migrating cultures, only Islam and Christianity remained aloof, owing to pressures from their Arab-Turkish and European Benefactors and Masters who pull the strings of the Indian Puppets. It is hightime for the Indian Branches of those two alien religions, to adapt themselves to the Culture of their Mother Land i.e. India. Other invaders/migrants have merged into the Indian Culture long back.

6. Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism, are only Reformative Branches of Indian Culture, and hence they are Branches of HInduism only. Basavanna Movement of Karnataka is also a Reformative Movement of Hinduism.

7. Swamijis, Shankaracharyas, Mathadhipatis, etc. etc. are not bosses of Hinduism. Are they elected by Hindus? Ms. Mayawati is unnecessarily giving-attributing undeserving authority and powers to the Swamijis, Shankaracharyas, Mathadhipatis.

8. Like Shri Prof. Kancha Ilaiah, who has launched a vitriolic book on 'vysyas' a traditionally merchant/trading community of INdia (now all communities/castes are engaged in trade), Ms. Mayawati also seems to be searching for her lost monies under a street light, ignoring the place where she has lost her monies. It is high time she starts a Truly Socialist Democratic Movement in India, attracting all the suffering poor in India.

9. Social Backwardness and Financial Backwardness are not mutually exclusive. Where there is economic deprivation, there will be social deprivation, and vice versa. Because she has amassed about some Rs. 500 crore (as per news reports), she cannot overlook the pitiable conditions of the poor people in India, to whatever CASTE, RELIGION they may belong to. Actually, the occupation of a person/family will determine his-her socio-economic backwardness. Birth, too has its importance, but its importance pertains more to inheritance of wealth. It is true that some radical reforms are needed in this area, but such reforms are possible only through Total True Socialism.

10. Though Congress has ruled for about 60 years, which may be a short time in the history of a country, but a long period in the history of a party, now, it has lost its longevity. Political Parties in India, ordinarily, have only short tenures. Congress too has entered that groove of its mortality. BJP may not be an exception, even if Mr. Narendra Modi is going to have one more chance of ruling this country from 2019 to 2024. Hence, Ms. Mayawati need not worry about BJP.

Question: Why True Total Socialism? Why not Reservations?

Ans: There is a beautiful ever memorable dialogue of Late Rao Gopala Rao in Silver Jubilee Telugu film 'Mutyala Muggu, released a few decades back:

Approx. English equivalent: Once God appeared to a devotee, and asked him to choose a boon. The devotee asked God: "Make hair sprout on the ear lobes of my Maternal Uncle". The God okayed it, and disappeared. The devotee went back home happily. Hairs sprouted in Maternal Uncle's Ears, i.e. the Devotee's desire (boon) got fulfilled. But his objective of becoming rich through inheritance from his Uncle did not get fulfilled.

Reason: The devotee was under a superstitious belief that if hairs sprout in Maternal Uncle's Ear lobes, his nephews will inherit fortunes from him. Hence the devotee asked for that boon from God: "Sprout hair in the ear lobes of my Uncle".

When God appeared before the devotee, if the devotee is prudent, he would have directly asked for a boon of "Make me rich" or some thing else equal to it. By asking for hair on Uncle's earlobes, the devotee squandered his opportunity.

In the same way, those who claim to be, and those want to improve the abominable conditions of the socio-economically deprived classes in this country, instead of Clamoring for Reservations, have to work for True Total Socialism in India, through democratic means.

759 Dr. Kancha Ilaiah and Swami Vivekananda, some similarities.

Dr. Kancha Ilaiah, Professor of Political Science at Maulana Azad Urdu University, Hyderabad, may please study Indian Economic Problems in depth, before he continues to advise people vigorously that they should eat more and more beef and goat-heads. India is a poor country with 130 million population, bulk of whom are unable to earn two square meals a day. He seems to be suffering from an obsession of hating Brahmins. He cannot equate 21st Century Brahmins with 2000 BC Aryan Brahmins, 1000 BC Aryan Brahmins, 0 AD Aryan Brahmins, 1000 AD Medieval Brahmins. He has to do lot of homework, to appreciate the evolution of socio-economic environment in India.

"... Vegetarianism will destroy the brain capacity. You cannot compete with vegetarian nationalism with China, Korea, Japan and America who are full scale `beefarians', `porkians', fisharians and even `frogarians'. Whatever is now poison they are eating, there brain is growing. ..."

"The whole steel industry is collapsing from here to England because China is producing steel in such a manner that all our economists are in doldrums, nothing is being understood by Indian economists. This is because, the Chinese brain has gone so sharp, our economists vegetarians brains are not working."

1. We have to respect the Right to Freedom of Speech and Expression of Dr. Ilaiah. At the sametime, sometimes, he appears to cross his limits of 'Freedom of Speech' granted by our Constitution. Then, in India, many others (probably including myself) may be crossing these limits, unintentionally or deliberately. Anyway, I appeal to Dr. Ilaiah to tone down his hatred towards 21st Century Brahmins who are different from 2000 BC Aryan Brahmins, 1000 BC Brahmins, 0 AD Brahmins, 1000 AD Brahmins. Just as Dalits, Upper Sudras, Lower Sudras have changed during these 4000 years of Indian History, Brahmins too have changed. Our Education, our learning has to make us better citizens. There is nothing wrong in speaking or writing truth. But while speaking or writing bitter truths, it will be better to occasionally caution the listeners / readers that it will be better they abstain from listening or reading if their sentiments are likely to be hurt. Dr. Ilaiah may not like Sanskrit maxims, but here is one Sanskrit maxim:

priyam brUyAt
satyam brUyAt
na bruyAt satyam apriyam.

Approximate English: Say what will be liked by the listener. Tell truth. But do not tell truth which is likely to hurt the listener.

This maxim seems to have certain limitations. The speaker/writer cannot withhold truth for unlimited periods, simply because it hurts the listener / reader. Someday or other the truth has to come out. Appropriateness of place and time may have to be kept in mind.

Like sugar coated pills, even unpleasant things can be communicated in carefully worded language, and also by pre-warning the listener / reader.

Dr. Ilaiah has to keep in mind that because some injustice has taken place to Dalits in gone-bye Centuries, it does not mean that he can throw rubbish on 21st Century Brahmins. Besides, he cannot prove with the available evidence that Ancient Brahimins alone were responsible for all the injustices that had taken place to Dalits, and Lower Sudras. Whatever injustices took place, they happened at the commands of Rulers, whether they were Kshatriyas (warrior caste by birth), or by Upper Sudras who were Rulers throughout these 4000 years. Very rarely, ancient and medieval Brahmins ruled India, such as Maratha rule, Pushya Mitra Sringa's rule. Most of the times, Brahmins were only Accountants. Upper Sudras were Kings, and Heads of Regions, Heads of Villages.

2. As long as people do not get misled by the utterances of great pundits of all hues (includes not only Dr. Kancha Ilaiah, Shri Katti Padma Rao, -- but also our pravachana kartas in Temples who have fancy titles such as 'ratnAkara (Ocean, treasure of gems)', 'cakravarti (Emperor)', gnAna putra (son of Supreme-awareness) etc., we can laugh, examine each statement separately and decide whether to accept them or not.

If Dr. Ilaiah is obsessed with finding fault with some castes for the ills done to Lower Sudras and Dalits, he should ask the ancient-medieval upper sudras, why they did that. The 21st Century Upper Sudras who happen to be landlords in our villages, business persons and industrialists in our cities, seem to be continuing THOSE OPPRESSIVE ACTIVITIES on dalits and lower SUdrAs even now.

For example, the States of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh are being ruled by just four LANDED CASTES. Naming them will not be appropriate. Dr. Kancha Ilaiah can go and ask the Telangana State Chief Minister K. Chandra Sekhara Rao, and Residual Andhra Pradesh State Chief Minister, Mr. Nara Chandra Babu Naidu, "which are those four landed castes", and why they alone are occupying all the important posts, and ruling these two States. Dr. Ilaiah can also ask them why the personal differences between Mr. KCR and Mr. Naidu, led to an unjust bifurcation of United Andhra Pradesh.

3. About Vegetarianism: Swami Vivekananda too seemed to have had views similar to Dr. Kancha Ilaiah. While Dr. Ilaiaih believes that India had started as a beef eating Nation, this ybrao-a-donkey believes that humans having evolved from vegetarian monkeys, Ancient Indians might have started as vegetarians, and later shifted to different types of non-vegetarian foods under influences from foreign invaders and migrants. I wrote at one of my blogposts here, that ancient Indians might have learnt beef eating from Aryan migrants from North Europe.

4. One letter by Swami Vivekananda to Raja Ajit Singh, Ruler of Khetri, arguing that vegetarians should eat grass is worth quoting here. Probably for this wisdom, Khetri Ruler might have given the name of 'Swami Vivekananda' to our Swamiji who earlier had different names, apart from his parent-given name of Narendranath Datta. As a reward for reading his mind, Raja of Khetri might have provided funds to send Vivekananda to Chicago Parliament of Religions. Swami Vivekananda wrote to Ajit Singh on 22nd May 1893, before going to the World Parliament of Religions in Chicago.

"...If our digestive apparatus is exactly like that of a cow — we ought and must be able to eat and digest grass. In that case poor Indians are fools to die of starvation in famine times while their natural food, grass, is so abundant, and your Highness' servants are fools to serve you while they have only to get up the nearest hillock and get a bellyful of grass instead of undergoing all the trouble of serving others!!! Grand American discovery indeed!!! Only I hope the holy dungs of such human cows may become of great use to the wonderful American author and his Indian disciple. Amen. So much for the cow-human theory. ..."

5. Vivekananda wants us to eat grass, whereas we eat rice and wheat which are nothing but different forms of grass seeds. Are we not surviving healthily with some minor ailments whereas Vivekananda concluded that he should eat nothing but meat and not drink water for combating his illnesses? In spite of eating all types of meat , Swami Vivekananda suffered numerous diseases, searched for 'karakkAya (myrobalan)' as a cure in his last days, and died at an early age of 39?

6. Even from the point of view of Indian Poverty and Indian Economics, it will be cheaper to produce 1 kg. of wheat, when compared to the cost of producing 1 kg. of goat's meat or beef. Our 130 million Indians are unable to get 2 square meals of vegetarian food every day. Where can we get beef and mutton? A pair of idlis cost Rs. 15/- today. How much will a goat-head-curry cost? In University Hostels, it may be cheap.

7. Dr. Ilaiah, like Swami Vivekananda seems to be suffering from an illusion that only non-vegetarians, particularly beef-eaters alone, will be physically strong, & can invent great things, and contribute to production and growth. Numerous factors contribute to growth of Nations. Dr. Ilaiah can, if he wants to help Indians sincerely, conduct research into those numerous factors, instead of harping on the merits of beef eating.
