652 Part 1 of Lack of Catharses for Rulers (worldwide?)

In the memorable 1966 Telugu film titled "ParamAnandayya Sishyula katha", its Hero Late Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao (popularly known as NTR) was an addict to a prostitute, a role played by L. Vijayalakshmi, a very talented danseuse. When people in his kingdom were haunted and hunted by wild animals which were foraging into villages and devoring people, the king NTR did not bother. People who came to represent their grievances to the Main Gate of his Fortess, his guards pushed them and drive them away.

(Everyday, some class women or workers come to the gates of Mr. Chandra Babu Naidu's Camp Office in Vijayawada, and are beaten and chased by the Police mercilessly. The guards of Paramanandayya's NTR's fort might have been more considerate and compassionate than the Police of Vijayawada.

The King was also a great devotee of Lord Shiva. Of course, Phallus worship was and is common in India. One dawn, on an auspicious day, he (addicted king NTR) was expected to worship Lord Shiva, as per his regimen. But when the morning bells for worship rang, NTR was asleep in the embrace of his danseuse-beloved. Alarmed that he was missing Shiva's worship, the NTR frantically searched for any phallus shaped body (called Shiva Lingam in India), so that he can worship. But he could not find any. At last he found a nipple of the breast of his paramour L. Vijayalakshmi, and treating it as Lord MahadEva, NTR carries on his worship. Subsequently, there was a dance contest between the danseuse L. Vijayalakshmi and the Heroine of the film K.R. Vijaya (as far as I could recollect, the dance-song was in rAg hindOLam), whom NTR rescued from a forest.

There is an Aristotlean tragedy drama term called "Catharsis" familiar to English Literature students. In tragedies, as per Aristotle's conception, the Protagonist (Hero) should commit a mistake, for which he undergoes misery and suffering. If possible, the Hero has to shed tears in remorse. The tears of the Hero should evoke empathies and sympathies from the spectators. In Shakespeare's drama Hamlet, we see this type of Catharsis for Hamlet. Similar Catharses we can find not only in the film "Paramanandaiah Sishyula Katha", but also in Telugu films like mahAmantri Timmarusu (King Krishna dEva rAya- NTR, by a mis-judgement orders the blinding of his mentor and Prime Minister Timmarusu. Later truth comes out that Timmarusu was innocent, and then Krishna dEva rAya repents). Same way, we have catharsis in ANR films Vipranarayana (loves a danseuse, gets wrongly accused of Royal jewels etc.), dEvadAs (could not take a daring step at the crucial moment of his beloved Parvati's marriage with somebody else), mahAkavi kALidAsu (loses his memory and fails to recognise his own wife). We have a sort of limited Catharsis for Rama (NTR) in the film Lavakusa.

Anyway, Telugu people very rarely remember the theme of Paramanandayya Sishyula Katha (The story of disciples of a Preceptor by name ParamAnandayya). Of course, they remember NTR every year at least twice on his birth anniversary and death anniversary, and more whenever they see his films, or when politicians go begging for votes in streets.

We shall, now come to our current Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi, Chief Minister of Telangana Mr. K. Chandrasekhara Rao, and the Chief Minister of Residual Andhra Pradesh, Mr. Nara Chandrababu Naidu. We have, actually, instead of electing Prime Ministers and Chief Ministers, elected "Event Managers". For them, Events come readily, be they elections in some nook and corner of India, some birth Anniversary or some death Anniversary, or visit of some Foreign Head of State (Presidents etc.) or the Head of Government (Prime Ministers).

For our Prime Ministers, Presidents, Chief Ministers, et al, a la their counterparts in other countries, there is no question of any Catharsis. Of course, sometimes, they may feign some heart-throb (Remember Mr. Narendra Modi's belated tears about the suicide of University of Hyderabad student Rohit Vemula). But they are all more of a ritual, rather than an effervescence (बुदबुदाहट , उबाँल, పొంగి వచ్చే ) of genuine grief. Again, it is also true, that if they experience genuine compassion / empathy / sympathy, then, they can't rule even for one day, or they can't live long. Like plants shedding their leaves in autumn and winter, some amount of shrugging off shoulders, and going ahead with the Event Management Bonanza, becomes unavoidable for politicians. Telugu language can supply to the World dictionaries, one idiomatic gerund for this term "dulipEsukOTam" (దులిపేసుకోటం).

Here, Telugu language can supply one word to English, and their top World Dictionaries such as Cambridge, Oxford, Webster, Chambers, Collins, etc. etc. That word is "lampaTam". LampaTam is addiction and obsession. LampaTuDU is the person who is addicted to and obsessed with "LampaTams". Now, in our Paramanandayya Sishyula Katha 1966 Telugu film, our Hero NTR was a vEsyA lampaTuDu.

Everybody knows that Mr. K. Chandrasekhara Rao, the Chief Minister of Telangana, is the bete noir and the Thorn in Flesh of Mr. Chandra Babu Naidu, the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. Recently when Mr. Chandra Babu Naidu and Mr. KCR embraced one another, some gullible innocent people might have thought that there is real truce between them. Such AsAni sE dhOka khAnE vAlE , bhOla bhAle may have to regret later. Those embraces are just like "intermissions" between one battle and another battle, in a World War.

Mr. KCR in his Election Meeting has tried drive the nail, straight into the coffin, without mincing words.

"...If Chandrababu Naidu wants to sweep, he has space from Hindupuram (in Anantapur district) to Itchapuram (Srikakulam). There are several towns in AP... Tirupati, Guntur, Vijayawada and Vizag. He is Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and he should focus on his state where he has lot of work to do. ..."

Keeping aside the vituperative tongue of Mr. K. Chandrasekhara Rao since more than 15 years which the Central Governments from time to time have failed to control, at least as far as the above Statement is concerned, there is some truth in what his venomous tongue siad.

Mr. Chandra Babu Naidu has become a Singapore LampaTuDu (Addict-ed to Singapore). If somebody utters the word "Singapore" , Mr. Chandra Babu Naidu forgets everything and just as Hunter-cum-Dacoit vAlmiki became Sage vAlmIki, by relentlessly chanting "marA marA", so long that snake-pits-hills grew around him, when our beloved Chief Minister Chandra Babu Naidu chants "Singapore" valmIkams [snake-pits-hills] (this word also India can supply to the pool of Global Lexicon), will rise to giant DhyAn Buddha's Statues size in Amaravathi.

My readers may get angry.  Yet, this donkey has to express its views honestly without hide and seek.  हमारे विज्ञ पाठक आग्रह उदग्र होने के संभवता है।  तो भी, यह गधा अपने ख्याल में दिखनेवाले सच ही इमानदारी से लिखना पडेगा।  నా పాఠకులకు , విజ్ఞులైన వారికి కూడ కోపం వచ్చే అవకాశం ఉంది.  కానీ నిజాయితి గానే వ్రాయక తప్పదు.

Renaming places, particularly cities, in the name of individuals mostly lead to controversies and disputes.   जगहों के नामों को, प्रत्येकतः शहरों के नामों को व्यक्तियों के नामो से नामकरण देना साधारणतः विवादग्रस्त होते हैं।  ప్రదేశాల పేర్లను, ముఖ్యంగా నగరాల పేర్లను వ్యక్తుల పేర్లతో నామకరణం చేసినపుడు అవి వివాదగ్రస్తం కావటం చాల సర్వ సాధారణం.

Coming to NTR (Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao, N.T. Rama Rao) first Non-Congress Chief Minister of United Andhra Pradesh 1983, was a great actor, politician, leader, campaigner etc.  ऎन टी आर् के बारे में कहना तो, (नंदमूरि तारक रामा राव , ऎन टी रामा राव) समैक्य आंध्र प्रदेश के प्रधम कांग्सेतर मुख्यमंत्री (१९८३) थे।  वह एक महानु नट सार्वभौम, राजकीय नेता, उद्यम कर्ता थे।  శ్రీ ఎన్ టీ ఆర్ (నందమూరి తారక రామా రావు, ఎన్. టీ . ఆర్ . రామా రావ్) విషయానికి వస్తే వారు సమైక్యాంధ్ర ప్రదేశ్ రాష్ట్రానికి ప్రథమ కాంగ్రెసేతర ముఖ్యమంత్రి ౧౯౮౩ మాత్రమే కాక మహా నటుడు, రాజకీయనేత, ప్రజానాయకుడు, ప్రచారకర్త మొ||.

But we should not suffer from error of proximity.  परन्तु हम निकटता की तृटी में नहीं गिरना चाहिए। కానీ మనం సమీప కాలంలో ఉండే వస్తువులను వ్యక్తులను మాత్రమే గుర్తించే ఎర్రర్ ఆఫ్ ప్రాక్సిమిటీ కి గురికాకూడదు.

The goal of separate State for Telugu speaking people started as early as 1906.  Prior to that  the Telugu speaking people of Coastal Andhra, and Rayala Seema were a part of Tamil Nadu (erstwhile composite Madras State).  तॆलुगु भाषण करने वाले को अलग राज्य चाहने के उद्यम लगभग १९०६ में ही शुरू हुआ।  तब, कोस्ता आंध्रा और रायल सीमा पुराने अविभक्त मद्रास राज्य मे भाग थे।  తెలుగు వారికి ప్రత్యేక రాష్ట్రం కావాలి అనే వాంఛ, దాదాపుగా ౧౯౦౬లో ప్రారంభమయింది.  అంతకు ముందు కోస్తాంధ్ర, దత్తమండలాలు (రాయలసీమ), ఉమ్మడి మద్రాసు రాష్ట్రంలో భాగం గా ఉండేది.




Among those who rendered valuable services to the cause of the Telugu people , were great freedom fighters like Andhra Ratna Duggirala Gopala Krishnaiah, Kasinathuni Nageswara Rao Pantulu, Ayyadevara Kaleswara Rao, Kalluri Subba Rao (Father of Rayala Seema freedom struggle),



 Gadicharla Harisarvottama Rao (Andhra Tilak), Garimella Satyanarayana, Tenneti Viswanatham, Gautu Lachchanna, Acharya Ranga, Konda Venkatappaiah, Ananta Sayanam Ayyangar, Pappuri Ramacharyulu, Tirumala Ramachandra, Hatti Sankara Rao, Polaga Satyanarayana, Kala Venkata Rao, Pattabhi Seetaramaiah, Nivarti Venkata Subbaiah, N. Sankara Reddy, N. Sanjiva Reddy, Andhra Kesari Tanguturi Prakasam, T.K.R. Sarma, Chandra Pulla Reddy, Shaik Nabi Rasool ,  Mutnoori Krishna Rao, Kala Venkata Rao, Tarimela Nagi Reddy, Puchalapalli Sundaraiah, Vavilala Gopalakrishnaiah, Alluri Sitarama Raju, Pedanandipadu Non-Cooperation Movement fighters... (This list is incomplete because of my ignorance).

After freedom, when the separate State movement reached its zenith, in Sept. 1951, Gollapudi Seetharama Sastry (Swami Sitaram) undertook a fast unto death, continued it for 35 days, and withdrew it after an appeal by Vinoba Bhave.


On 19th Oct. 1952, AmarajIvi PoTTi SrIrAmulu commenced his fast unto death for a separate State, persisted with his demand, and breathed his last on 15th Dec. 1952.  This sacrifice gave great momentum to the separate Telugu State movement, and finally led to separation of Ceded Districts (Rayala Seema) and Coastal Andhra from the Composite Madras State.




పైవారిలో కొందరు, నీలం సంజీవ రెడ్డి, ఆచార్య రంగా, అనంతశయనం అయ్యంగార్, అయ్యదేవర కాళేశ్వర రావు, టంగుటూరి ప్రకాశం (పాక్షికంగా), రాజకీయంగా కొన్ని పదవులను పొందారు.  తెన్నేటి విశ్వనాథం, గౌతులచ్చన్న, వావిలాల గోపాలకృష్ణయ్య వంటి నేతలు ప్రజలచేత ఎన్నుకోబడి, ఆదరించబడ్డారు.  గరిమెళ్ళ సత్యనారాయణ గారు మద్రాసు నగరంలో, దుర్భర దారిద్ర్యంలోనే తనువు చాలించారు.   తరిమెల నాగిరెడ్డి గారు అజ్ఞాతంలో ఉండగా స్వర్గస్థులయ్యారు.  ప్రకాశంగారు బికారిలాగా సర్వం కోల్పోయారు.  తిరుమల రామచంద్రగారు స్వాతంత్ర్య సమరంలో  జైలులో ఖైదీగా నూనెగానుగకు ఎద్దులాగా కట్టబడి రోజంతా ఆగానుగను తిప్పుతూ చాకిరి చేశారు.  ఇంక అండమాన్ నికోబార్ పోర్ట్ బ్లేర్ జైలులో కన్నుమూసిన స్వాతంత్ర్య యోధుల లెక్కలు మన వద్ద లేవు. 

Among the above participants, some participants like Nilam Sanjiva Reddy, Acharya Ranga, Anantasayanam Ayyangar, Ayyadevara Kaleswara Rao, Tanguturi Prakasam (only partly), reaped and received their political benefits.  Leaders like Tenneti Visvanatham, Gautu Lachchanna, Vavilala Gopala Krishnaiah, enjoyed people's respects.  Late Garimella Satyanarayana died in Madras, in dire poverty.   Late Tarimela Nagi Reddy died incognito.  Prakasam died a pauper.   Tirumala Ramachandra was harnessed to an oil expeller gAnuga like a bullock and made to toil in jail as a freedom fighter.   We do not have any proper account of freedom fighters who were sent to Andaman Nicobar Jail and died there.

All these great people, were in no way, inferior to Late N.T. Rama Rao, except in the arena of films.    ఈ గొప్ప త్యాగశీలురు, ఉద్యమశీలురు అందరూ, ఒక్క సినిమాల నటనల్లో తప్ప శ్రీ ఎన్ టీ ఆర్ గారికి ఎందులోనూ తీసిపోరు.


Persons like Kalluri Subba Rao and Gadicharla Harisarvottama Rao did not get their appropriate recognition. కల్లూరి సుబ్బారావు, గాడిచర్ల హరిసర్వోత్తమ రావు వంటి వారికి రావలసినంత గుర్తింపు రాలేదు.


Shri N.T. Rama Rao, born in 1923, we do not expect him to participate in Quit India Movement of 1942 as a 19 year old boy.   His entry into political arena was as late as in 1982, directly to become a Chief Minister, with film glamour.  Of course, he did some great things, which ordinary politicians would not have dared to do, such as removal of patel patvari munasab karaNams, introduction of Mandals, abolition of some unproductive institutions, abolition of Legislative Council, demand for abolition of Governor posts, to name a few.


శ్రీ ఎన్ టీ రామారావు గారు ౧౯౨౩లో జన్మించారు.  ౧౯౪౨ నాటి క్విట్ ఇండియా ఉద్యమంనాటికి ౧౯ ఏళ్ళు ఉంటాయి కాబట్టి ఆ ఉద్యమంలో వారు పాల్గౌనాలని మనం ఆశించలేము.    వారు ప్రజా జీవితంలోకి ఆలస్యంగా ౧౯౮౨లో ప్రవేశించి, డైరక్టుగా సినిమా గ్లామర్తో ముఖ్యమంత్రి అయ్యారు.  అయితే వారు, వృత్తి రాజకీయనేతలు చేయటానికి సాహసించలేని కొన్ని పనులను అవలీలగా చేసేశారు.  పటేల్ పట్వారీ మునసబు కరణం వ్యవస్థ నిర్మూలన, మండల్ వ్యవస్థను ప్రవేశ పెట్టటం, అనుత్పత్తి దాయకమైన సంస్థలను రద్దులు చేయటం, శాసనమండలిని రద్దు చేయించటం, గవర్నర్ పదవిని రద్దుచేయాలని డిమాండు చేయటం, వంటివి మచ్చుకి కొన్ని.


He has some grave shortcomings also.  Discussing them, my critics will not like.  Discussing them at this juncture, will also not be really beneficial to the people.  శ్రీ ఎన్ టీ ఆర్ కి కొన్ని తీవ్ర లోపాలు కూడా ఉన్నాయి.  వాటిని చర్చించటం, మన విమర్శకులకు ఇష్టం ఉండదు.  ఈసందర్భంలో వాటిని చర్చించటం వల్ల ప్రజలకు కలిగే లాభం కూడ ఏమీ లేదు.  వదిలేయటమే మంచిది.


Today, if TDP is in power, the TDP leaders may want to name the Capital city as NTR Nagar.   Later if YSRCP comes to power, they may change it to YSR Nagar.  If BJP comes into power, they may want to call the Capital Venkaiah Naidu Nagar.   If Lok Satta comes into power, they may change it to Jayaprakash Nagar.  Changing names, becomes an endless game of political play and political highhandedness.  Name-change games and movements divert the attention of the people from the original problem of poverty, and inequalities of income and wealth.


 నేడు టీడీపీ అధికారంలో ఉంది కాబట్టి రాజధానిని ఎన్ టీ ఆర్ నగర్ అని పేరు పెట్టాలని కోరుతున్నారు.  రేపు వైయస్ ఆర్ పీ అధికారంలోకి వస్తే రాజధానికి వైయస్ ఆర్ నగర్ గా పేరు మార్చే అవకాశం ఉంది.   ఆతరువాత బిజేపీ అధికారంలోకి వస్తే, రాజధానికి వెంకయ్యనాయుడు నగర్ అని పేరు పెట్టాలని నిర్ణయించ వచ్చు.   లోక్ సత్తా అధికారం లోకి వస్తే జయప్రకాశ్ నగర్ అని పేరు మార్చచ్చు.  ఈ పేర్లు మార్చటం అనేది ఒక అంతులేని ఆటగా మారుతుంది.  తమ రాజకీయ ఆధిక్యతను నిరూపించుకోటానికి ఒక ఉపకరణంగా మారుతుంది.  ఈపేర్లు మార్చే క్రీడల వల్ల ప్రజల అసలు సమస్య అయిన దారిద్ర్యం, ఆదాయం సంపదల అసమానతల మూల సమస్యను మర్చి పోతాము

In the circumstances, it will be more apt to use the present geographical name of the Capital as Tulluru, if necessary we may make it, Tulluru16N80E to indicate its location.   The name, Amaravati is not bad altogether.  We can also examine a generic name like APCR16N80E or APCR1680 (Andhra Pradesh Capital Region 1680).  Or just APCr.  Or just 16N80E.

ఇటువంటి పరిస్థితులలో, రాజధాని కేంద్ర గ్రామం యొక్క భౌగోళిక నామం తుళ్ళూరునే కొనసాగించటం, మేలు.  లేదనుకుంటే భౌగోళిక కొలతలు అయిన ౧౬వ ఉత్తర అక్షాంశం, ౮౦వ తూర్పు రేఖాంశాలను కలిపి తుళ్ళూరు౧౬౮౦ లేక తుళ్ళూరు16N80E అనికూడ వ్యవహరించవచ్చు.  మనం ఏపీసీఆర్1680 లేక కేవలం 1680 అనికూడ వ్యవహరించ వచ్చు.
 

Final word of caution  ముందు జాగ్రత్తగా సూచన.

Better, we gradually, reduce our thinking on linguistic and regional lines.  That will help us to concentrate on poverty and inequalities, from the angle of Classes (Working Class etc.).   Smaller States will help people immensely.  It will be more apt and desirable to try for three States: North Andhra, South Andhra, Rayala Seema, before animosities develop among the three Regions.

మనం క్రమ క్రమంగా ప్రాంతీయ కోణం, భాషా కోణం నుంచి దురభిమానాన్ని  పెంచుకోటాన్ని తగ్గించుకోటమే మేలు.  అలా తగ్గించుకోటం వల్ల  మనం దారిద్ర్యం, అసమానతలపై దృష్టిని కేంద్రీకరించటానికి వీలవుతుంది.  శాస్త్రీయమైన శ్రామిక వర్గం కోణం నుండి ఆలోచించటానికి వీలవుతుంది.   చిన్న రాష్ట్రాలు ప్రజలకు చాల సౌకర్యంగా ఉండి, వారికి ఖర్చులు, యాతనలను తగ్గించి ఎంతో సహాయపడతాయి.  మనం మూడు రాష్ట్రాలకై ప్రయత్నించటం, అంటే ఉత్తరాంధ్ర, దక్షిణాంధ్ర, రాయలసీమ రాష్ట్రాల కొరకు  మూడు ప్రాంతాలమధఅయ తీవ్ర విభేదాలు తలెత్తక ముందే ప్రయత్నించటం మేలుగా ఉంటుంది.



The seed for discontent may arise from the choice of Capital in Vijayawada-Guntur Area, Pattisam Lift Irrigation, neglect of Anantapur etc.   The present Government driven by Central Andhra Landlords and industrialists does not seem to be interested in decentralised balanced development of State.

అసంతృప్తి విత్తనాలు ఇప్పటికే గాలికి ఎగిరి పడి ఆయా క్షేత్రాలలో భూమిలో నిక్షిప్తమై నిగూఢంగా ఉండి ఉండవచ్చు.  రాజధానిని విజయవాడ గుంటూరు ప్రాంతంలో నెలకొల్పటం,   పట్టిసం లిఫ్ట్ ఇరిగేషన్, అనంతపురాన్ని అశ్రధ్ధ చేయటం, ఇలా ఏవైనా ఆవిత్తనాలను మొలకలెత్తించ వచ్చు.  ప్రస్తుతం శేషాంధ్ర ప్రభుత్వం మధ్యాంధ్ర భూస్వాములు, పారిశ్రామికవేత్తలు, వ్యాపారుల చేత డ్రైవింగు చేయబడుతున్నది.  వీరికి రాష్ట్రం వికేంద్రిత సమతుల్యతతో కూడిన అభివృధ్ధిని సాధించాలనే కాంక్ష లోపించటం గమనార్హం.  


To start with the decentralisation, we can straight go for the location of A.P. High Court  and A.P. Governor's Raj Bhavan, at Tirupati.  Reason:  Many High Court Judges, Supreme Court Judges, Governors (A.P. Governor probably every week), love to visit Tirupati every year with family and cherish to be received with temple honors such as pUrNa kumbhams.  We can, at least,  reduce expenditure to the exchequer for the pilgrimages, in the form of Special planes and helicopters, car rallies.  Renigunta Airport will be nearby.

వికేంద్రీకరణానికి ప్రథమ దశగా, శేషాంధ్ర ప్రదేశ్ హైకోర్టును, గవర్నర్ నివసించే రాజ్ భవన్ ను, తిరుపతిలో నెలకొల్పితే బాగుంటుంది.  కారణమేమంటే, రాష్ట్రాల హైకోర్టు జడ్జీలు , సుప్రీం కోర్టు జడ్జీలు, గవర్నర్లు వీళ్ళు తరచుగా తిరుపతిని సందర్శించాలని, అక్కడ పూర్ణకుంభం స్వాగతంతో సహా సకల మర్యాదలు పొందాలని కోరుకుంటూ ఉంటారు.  హైకోర్టును, రాజ్ భవన్ ను తిరుపతిలో నెలకొల్పటం ద్వారా, మనం ప్రత్యేక విమానాల, హెలీకాప్టర్ల, ఖర్చులను తగ్గించుకోవచ్చు.  రేణిగుంట విమానాశ్రయం దగ్గరగా ఉంటుంది.  శ్రీహరికోటకు కూడ అందుబాటులో ఉండవచ్చు.
