Here is a beautiful link to a Spectator.co.uk article by Ms. Carol Sarler, on the issue of Celebrities employing publicists to boost their image. The context of the Article is, the leakage of Emails sent by Mr. David Beckham, Famous UK Footballer, to his publicist, which have something to do with Knighthood for the footballer. In her article, Ms. Carol Sarler, made a brilliant observation:--

"... Whatever calamitous infelicities David Beckham did or did not email to his publicist, few will doubt that he has lived to rue the day. Nevertheless, I'll bet teeth that he is pointing his ruing in the wrong direction: that he is tormented by the moment he pressed 'send' — but not similarly kicking himself for hiring a publicist in the first place. It will be left to thee and me to wonder what was the point. When you are already richer than God, you are one of the sporting legends of your generation and your face would be recognised by a yeti in the wastes of Siberia — why might you ever want to fork out gazillions to a man who describes himself as 'managing David Beckham's global communications strategy’, which translates as ‘making him even more famous’? ..."

Two things may have to be considered: 1. Whether publicists, also undertake the work of 'lobbyists' for getting the expected awards/honors/titles such as knighthood?

2. Whether the results of efforts of the publicists can be mathematically measured? Can they be tangibly estimated? E.g. say, in the case of Mr. David Beckham, what were his publicity levels before employing the publicist? What are his publicity levels after employing the publicist? The number of Twitter followers, Facebook Followers, Likes, etc. do not appear to be dependable indicators for these measurements.

3. Why do the names of only some SELECTED CELEBRITIES- such as politicians, cricketers, film stars, doctors, lawyers, business tycoons, etc. appear in the Press and Electronic Media frequently, and in a favorable tone, whereas several others who have equally credible performances and talents are ignored? What are the roles of the publicists employed by such high profile celebrities, in ensuring such larger-than-life publicities? Are the Publicists creating snake pits from mole hills?

Question: Do Indian Celebrities appoint publicists for Media Glaze, and lobbyists for Awards Chase?

Ans: It appears so, but more evidence and research is needed. Let us hope that India's Media does it, some day.

Whom can we include here? We need not mention individual names of India's who is who. Almost all the film stars seem to have personal publicists, including the Great Three Khans, Big B (this word itself seems to have been coined by Publicists), all the top Cricketers. It is also difficult to say whether this is a trait of the 21st Century or the 19th and 20th Centuries.

It is difficult to pin-point any particular Celebrity as the one who has depended on crutches provided by publicists. It might have started with Late Ms. Indira Gandhi, the Third Regular Prime Minister of India, who succeeded the First Regular Prime Minister of INdependent India, Late Jawaharlal Nehru, and the Second Regular Prime Minister Late Lal Bahadur Shastry. The cotere surrounding Ms. Indira Gandhi, tried to depict Ms. Gandhi, as the Savior of India, with "Amma" (Mother) image. A Congress President of Her days, Dev Kanth Baruva, called her "Indira is India, and India is Indira".

Ms. Indira Gandhi, Late Rajiv Gandhi, et al needed some type of prop-ups because, they have nothing significant such as Educational Accomplishments, Literary Creations, Contributions of Journalism, etc. to coo about, except their belonging to Nehru Dynasty and occupying the Prime Ministerial Chair (गद्दी సింహాసనం) through succession, either by their own volition or per force, pushed by sycophant politicians who wanted to use the scions of Nehru Dynasty as tools to serve their own vested interests.

When it comes to Late V.P. Singh, the Prime Minister who succeeded Late Rajiv Gandhi, it might have become difficult for his publicists to find out a niche to magnify him. They found Late V.P. Singh as a prolific painter and tried to present him as such. Actually, Late V.P. Singh didn't need any such prop-ups, because he was already Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, and earned some sort of reputation as some one who was not very particular about his power, post, and position.

There were, there are, and there will be many scientists of great accomplishments in India, who contributed greatly to India's Scientific progress, and India's Defence Preparedness. Yet, Late A.P.J. Abdul Kalam (I do not want to belittle his scientific accomplishments) received special publicities right from the days he was Head of DRDO in Hyderabad, and the processes went successfully to such levels that he received the attention of both the Congress and BJP Top Leaders, who might have found him as an acceptable minority face to occupy the Chair of the President of India. I do not wish to say that Late APJ Abdul Kalam was ill-qualified to be the Rashtrapati. But, there were/are many others who were/are equal to him in several respects, but yet, they did not reach their zeniths, or get opportunities.

DANGERS OF VAGARIES OF FORTUNE BECKONING SOMEBODY EITHER AT RANDOM OR IN SOME OTHER MANNER / COURSE

The main problem with this type of somebody getting lifted to top by quirk of luck, or what I do not know, results, at least in one fall out. Ambitious bureaucrats, politicians, film stars, cricketers, even doctors and lawyers, judges, start trusting astrologers, and tantrics with a hope that they will turn-around their sluggish-not-so-fast-raising fortunes. India has several God Persons, astrologers-tantrics-God-persons who receive patronage from bureaucrats, politicians, who suffer from an erroneous belief that the miracle-makers can change their future.

The following paragraph from the article of Ms. Carol Sarler, linked to above, is very very important:

"... Make no mistake: the personal publicist has nothing in common with the traditional PR machine that has always played midwife to the launch of a book, play, film or sporting event. The machine concentrates on the project before the person; an interview with, say, the leading actor is only part and parcel of the wider aim to nudge interest and consequently ticket sales. Few, indeed, hold the personal publicist in greater contempt than the more experienced public relations expert. ‘We don’t share the same DNA,’ sniffs one such. The personal publicist gives small damn for the bigger picture. Unlike an agent or manager, who works for a percentage of earnings and thus is invested in the long-term success of the collective project, the personal publicist is paid a fee to concentrate on the individual, even at a cost to the rest. ..."

In the above paragraph, Ms. Carol Sarler has clearly brought out the subtle distinction between the "Public Relations (PR)" Staff and the Publicists. In Indian Government Departments, Corporations, Institutions and Organisations, this tribe of who are known as "Public Relations Officers" and "Liason Officers" are very common. IN my last birth as a "Public Sector Bank Officer", I have seen some such creatures. Bosses seem to use them less for their own personal publicity tasks. The PROs and Liaison Officers seem to be used for some tasks which the Boss (bureaucrat/politician/Corporate Head, or whoever it may be), himself would hesitate to do personally on behalf of the Organisation, even if he-she has time.

Example: Booking Air-Tickets from an Airline, for Bigger Bosses, at the last moment, jumping the queue.
Booking Guest Houses owned by Corporate Clients, for use of Bigger Bosses and their families.
Sending sarees, suits, silver and gold articles to the Bigger Bosses and their families, as gifts.
Sending booze bottles/giving booze parties to Journalists, Government Officials, to get publicity or to get favors. etc. etc.

Govt. / Public Sector / Private Sector Corporate Bosses consider these tasks as menial, to do themselves personally, and somebody has to be entrusted with this delicate work.

INDIVIDUALS, AND PRIVATE ORGANISATIONS CANVASSING FOR GOVERNMENT AWARDS SUCH AS BHARAT RATNA, PADMA VIBHUSHAN, PADMA BHUSHAN etc.

Like the United Kingdom, United States, France, in India also, lobbying for Awards, Fellowships, Rajya Sabha Memberships, Foreign Jaunts etc. is quite common. If some publicists help the wannabe with props-up, such appointments and services also get respectability.

ARRANGING FACE-BOOK LIKES, TWEETS AND RE-TWEETS, HASHES TO PROMOTE INDIVIDUALS AS GREAT STARS, FUTURE PRIME MINISTERS, PRESIDENTS, CONDUCTING INTERNET SURVEYS

These things, even when carried on magnitude of millions, yet do not attract criticism. They are all accepted as STATE OF THE ART, and PART OF ARTS OF LIVING.

799 (Part 1/10) of Lenin-Trotsky-MNRoy-Open Source Management and, Management of Truly Socialist Economy and Society

Open Source Management, and Management of True Complete Socialism has some similarities. Managing a truly Communist / Socialist / Marxist economy amidst dozens of Capital countries blinking and glittering around with their goodies of luxury cars, casinos, film festivals, facebooks and twitters, may be more complex and complicated when compared to running repositories and patrons of Open Source Management, in the arena of Computer Operating Systems and Software. Open Source Management, prima facie, is not a lucre-accumulating vocation. Unless persons and institutions are endowed with some supreme commitment to their goals and ideals, there is a risk of their getting fatigued and tired in the midway. Like metal fatigue, fatigue of "providing something free over long term" without expecting cognizible rewards is greater-greater-greater than an acrobatic feat of walking on a thin wire across Niagara falls.

OPEN SOURCE MANAGEMENT

The Open Source Movement, is to a large extent influenced by the problems faced by Computer-users with the incarcerating Operating System Windows of Mr. Bill Gates, and the commercial software churned out by business organisations. While there is nothing wrong with doing genuine, honest and legitimate business by discovering and innovating gadgets and widgets, Windows and their Associate Developers indulging in restrictive methods. Imposing some restrictions on distribution or usage, when software and/or code is provided free, is understandable, making these restrictions eternal, too cumbersome, preventing people from using the software purchased by them after paying through their necks and throats, could not be swallowed by user-society. From it generated, the groups of suffering users, searching for "Open Source". Such was their suffering, they even offered to spend a substantial part of their own time, money, and resources, for the cause of the Open Source Movement.

Like phoenix from ash emerged, the Linux Operating System from the Unix, to challenge the monopolies of Windows, Internet Explorer, and other commercial and proprietory software makers. Gradually, with the help of volunteer developers, Open Source Movement matured into a true challenger to Microsoft, Adobe and their ilk. Debian, Debian forked Ubuntu, Ubuntu forked Linux Mint, Lubuntu, Xubuntu, Porteu, etc. operating Systems have started enjoying good support from users and have become substitutes for Windows.

In promoting the Open Source Movement, development and distribution of Open Source Packages, pioneers and leaders like SourceForge, Launchpad have rendered yeomen services by giving shelter and bandwith to the packages. From my own personal experience, I do not know, how many dollars ( I do not have such dollars and hence I might have been forced to forego, or indulge in use of pirated software) I might have been compelled to shell out elsewhere to download the bulky and bloated Windows packages both from so called genunine and dubious websites. As a person of small means, I can only express my gratitude to Launchpad, SourceForge, and many other Linux developers and donors which made the Open Source Movement a true challenger to some Commercial-Proprietory sharks.

Sameway, Open Office, Abhiword, LibreOffice have become good substitutes for MS Office.

BENEFITS OF USING OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE

1. free of payment. Those who have money can voluntarily donate.

2. Those who are interested, can study the source code also, and improvise upon it for own use, and also distribute the improvised packages under the GNU public license system. Those who make such improvements can also contact the original developers and contribute to the development of the original software.

3. Most linux software, by and large, is virus-free and virus-resistant, unlike windows where if we download and install one package, thousand other things like bootsector viruses, file-proliferators, unsolicited unwanted tool-bars in the web-browsers will appear and make our work a hell as it is difficult to get out of the intrusions.

The SourceForge blog article linked by me above, discusses in length the pros and cons associated with Open Source Management. Apart from those discussed above, there is also the primary problem of finding out monetary resources for day to day work, such as payment of bills of rents, minimum salaries, electricity, computer hardware, bandwidth, etc. etc.

TRUE COMPLETE SOCIALISM

In our previous blogposts, I have already discussed some of the features which I have tried to attribute to the True Complete Socialism of my dreams or fantasies. Before, we can discuss some more of them, it is necessary for us to have a look into recent comments about the pirouetting ambulations and peregrinations of the socialist movement in United Kingdom. Here is a very thought-provoking article by Peter Hitchens in Spectator dated 20th Aug. 2016.

Honestly, I do not KNOW much about Trotsky. When I was reading about Late Manavendra Nath Roy (popularly called M.N. Roy) who was one of the pioneers of Indian Communism, some years back, I came across the name of Trotsky. I have some sympathies for Trotsky, because he lost his life in the hands of the power-mongering dictator Joseph Stalin.

Earlier, I had great respect towards Lenin, as a leader who has given a "practical effect" and "implementation" to the theories of Late Lenin. But a part of that was blunted and dented, when I learnt through history that Lenin did not hesitate to enter into treaties with the Adolph Hitler of his early rule. I am unable to write anything about it right now, because my own knowledge of Lenin is limited. But, after learning about Lenin's entering into pacts with Hitler, one question frequently lingered in my mind: "Had Lenin lived to the end of the World War II", would Lenin have acted / reacted to Hitler's manoeuvres and massacres, in the same manner as Joseph Stalin?". I could not reconcile to a possibility that Lenin too would have reacted in the same manner as Stalin. Personally, the horizon of my knowledge is limited, I view that Lenin and Stalin seem to have similar behavioral patterns. I seem NOT HAVE much adoration for Trotsky or M.N. Roy, probably because, I have started considering every writing about living powerful persons / or deceased celebrities/halo bearers as hagiographic exaggerations, thus requiring much search and research to accept them as facts.

We have seen the fiasco of Communism in Vietnam, which went through ghastly battles in rivers and swamps, and massacres in the hands of French Colonialists and the American air and chemical warfare. What did Vietnam learn after going through the hell? Nothing. Today, Vietnam is hand in glove with U.S.A. inviting American Multi Nationals into its land. Of course, Vietnam can always have an excuse of defending themselves from the military and territorial ambitions of China. Like a calf of a kangaroo which hides in the belly-pouch of its mother, Vietnam seems to find security in the guard of U.S., forgetting the past injuries. If this is the retrogression level of a country like Vietnam which had earned much reputation and sympathy from the World, what can we or what should we expect from the Socialist Parties of U.K., France, or the Socialist Facades of Mr. Bernie Sanders.

795 If Mr. Bernie Sanders were a TRUE SOCIALIST he ought not to have joined Democratic Party!

Last time we wrote about Mr. Nick Cohen in our blog was on 24th May 2015, in our blog post No. 510. Click here to have a look at post No. 510 at this blog . At that time, we were discussing about the Indian oligarchs eager to buy posh and prime properties in London. This time, here is a need to compare American Socialist Bernie Sanders, British Labor Leader Jeremy Corbyn, and the European past of Communism of the days of Stalin and Trotsky. Mr. Cohen did it quite effectively and impressively in his article titled "LEFT HAS A HISTORY OF FOOLISHNESS" in Spectator, dated 30th July 2016. I have given below the link to this Spectator's article, for our readers to study. I am not going to rediscover or reinvent what Mr. Cohen has done so convincingly and penetratingly.

Being the largest democracy in the world, howsoever badly the so-called democracy survives in India, being one of the citizens of the poorest country in this world (this truth most Indians do not admit), I am tempted to fantasize about the future of Left in India, and explain how relevant one quote of Mr. Cohen in his article is, for our experience with the Left Parties in India. Conversely, if Indian Left Parties can rebuild themselves and succeed, that success will definitely serve as a model to the Euro, British, American, and probably even for Chinese People, not to write of the African Peoples, and the South American Peoples. (Peoples, as plural= in the meaning of Nations).

Mr. Bernie Sanders, if he were a true socialist, he ought not to have joined the Democratic Party in United States, which is a bourgeoisie Party.

I am tempted to use a cliche like simile here: A cuckoo cannot sing like a cuckoo, when it is in the party of crows. Initially, crows may allow the cuckoo for a little time to melody like a cuckoo, but eventually the cuckoo will be forced to caw like a crow.

In management science lingo, this can probably called SOCIALISATION. If a newly admitted an employee / Manager in an organisation refuses to get SOCIALISED and undergo the METAMORPHOSIS, there will be EXTERMINATION and OSTRACIZATION.

Now, let us see the predicament of Mr. Sanders. He gave repeated messages to his supporters that Ms. Clinton is a puppet of Wall Street. By and large, it is true also. At the same time, Mr. Sanders ought to have kept in mind that Mr. Trump is also a puppet of the same Wall Street.

Is Mr. Trump a larger puppet, and Ms. Clinton a smaller puppet?

Are there any differences in magnitude and direction between the two? Answer for this can be : Appearances can, sometimes, be deceptive. Ms. Clinton may appear as polished and refined. Mr. Trump may appear as roguish and rubbish. But is there real difference between them? Is that difference so large, so wide, so deep, that Mr. Sanders has to give a call to his supporters to support Ms. Clinton, knowing pretty well that she is a puppet of Wall Street? This shift also gives us another grammatical example of degrees of comparison: Mr. Sanders is a big puppet, Ms. Clinton is a bigger pupper, and Mr. Trump is the biggest puppet!

COMPARISON OF ABOVE SANDERS BEHAVIOR , WITH THE INDIAN LEFTIST BEHAVIORS

The main Communist parties in India are 1. CPI (Communist Parties of India). 2. CPIM (Communist Party of India-Marxist), also called CPM. Both these parties are facing identify crises, notwithstanding their win in 2016 Kerala Assembly Elections, (Kerala=Southwest State of India on the coast of Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean).

Just as Sanders was compelled by his Democratic Party peers (or probably on his own volition) to ask his supporters to TRANSFER their support to Ms. Clinton, with an ostensible objective of preventing Trump entering the White House, Indian Communist Parties have an ostensible objective of preventing Communal Forces (in their view BJP Party)from capturing power in India.

Left parties in India, particularly CPM maintained that it wanted to stay at an equi-distance both from Congress and BJP. That stand was logically correct, because BJP has earned a bad name for enflaming majority communalism, whereas Congress Party tacitly pampered minority communalism. Indian Left Parties if they are truly committed to complete socialism, cannot enter into electoral alliances with bourgeoisie parties. In 2016 Bengal Elections, CPM tried to gather some votes by entering to electoral adjustments with Congress. While Congress benefited from it, CPM paid the price for it.

WHAT IS THE LESSON FROM ALL THIS WHETHER IN INDIA, UK OR USA?

Supporters and Voters are not puppets. Leftist Parties and Truly Socialist Parties have to realise this. The difference between the supporters of bourgeoisie parties and the socialist parties is: Supporters of Socialism become socialists because they have analytical abilities, because they have strong convictions, because they have had in their lives bitter experiences inflicted by Capitalism. Their shift in favour of True Socialism becomes rather indelible and nearly unalterable . Hence, they are not TRANSFERABLE like cheques and drafts, by endorsement and delivery.

WHAT MAY BE THE RIGHT OPTION FOR MR. SANDERS, AND THE TRUE SOCIALISTS IN US?

They have to start a NEW SOCIALIST PARTY in United States, build a truly socialist movement, and get ready for 2020. This is going to be difficult. But where is the choice? Mr. Sanders, or True Socialists, cannot hijack Democratic Party or Republican Party!

WHAT OPTIONS WE CAN THINK OF FOR SUPPORTERS OF TRUE SOCIALISM IN BRITISH LABOR PARTY?

In my mother tongue Telugu language there is a word 'nEti bIrakAya'. It refers to the vegetable a gourd, akin to rugged gourd (Telugu bIra kAya) family. nEti bIrakAya refers to a gourd with CLARIFIED BUTTER. Though nEti bIra kAya is a rare and tasty vegetable, gullible persons may believe that it also contains CLARIFIED BUTTER. British Labor Party, does not contain LABOR. Chinese Communist Party does not contain COMMUNISM.

In this world, especially the Capitalist World, the hard and harsh reality is PACKING CONCEALS THE TRUE NATURE. Actual goods do not conform to their Label. Whereever samples are used, merchandise actually delivered do not conform to samples. Everywhere, only tokenism prevails. In other words, MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING. True supporters of Working Class in U.K. may have to start a new Labor Party, with some other name, and start afresh.
