REPLY: SECOND VERSION OF THE STORY OF PINGALI VARI PEKI

Brief Recapitualation of Version 1 story, upto the point of Surana and his wife getting vexed with CEASELESS DEMANDS FOR WORK, is as under:
Quoting from Post No. 922:
Pingali Surana (or his ancestors) were going in a forest. We shall take it as Surana himself was going. On the forest path, he found a bead. He picked it up, and took home, quite casually, without thinking of consequences. When he reached home, he found a woman waiting there at his home. She said that her name was 'pEki'. She wanted to work as a servant in Surana's home, without taking any salary. Her only condition was that under no circumstances, she should be kept idle. 24 hours, she should be given work. Surana and his wife didn't / couldn't foresee the difficulties ahead. They gladly took her into service. Intially, everything went on well, because there was lot of pending things and chores. Whatever work was given to her, she was finishing in few minutes, and was asking for more work. Surana's wife was unable to provide more and more work to pEki, who was pestering them for work.

One day, sUrana's wife delivered a baby, after pregnancy. pEki was also sleeping in the same room as sUrana's wife. In those days, there were no electric lights, or remotes. As the oil lamp was getting exhausted, sUrana's wife asked pEki to push up the wick slightly, to make it burn better. pEki suddenly felt lazy, and not ready to get up, stretched her tongue from the place she was sleeping, and pushed up the wick with her tongue. Seeing this, sUrana's wife was flabbergast (astonished), and started believing that pEki was not a human, and that she might have been a ghost.

Next day, sUrana's wife narrated the incident to her husband. After sending pEki to fetch water from river, in order to escape from pEki, they tried to shift their family to a neighboring village, taking all their belongings in carts. When pEki returned from the River with water, she found that sUrana's family was missing, and neighbors told her that they shifted to the neighboring village, taking their luggage on carts. pEki found that there was a grinding-stone which was left out by sUrana's family, owing to its heavy weight. She took it up on-to her shoulders, and went to the neighboring village, in search of sUrana's new home. She reached there, and again started pestering them for work.

Finally, sUrana and his wife were tired.

FROM THIS POINT, VERSION 2

Surana's wife asked Peki to comb her hair (Surana's wife's hair, not Peki's hair). Peki combed her mistress' hair, and after braiding it, she collected all the drops-out hair(s) and made it into a a small bundle. Surana's wife asked Peki to go to Tungabhadra River , wash all the hair with River's water and Tamarind, make them straight without rings / wrinkles like thin rods of metal, and bring them back. Peki went to the River, washed the hair with Tamarind, applied Tamarind to the hair, and tried to make each piece of hair straight like thin metal rods. The more she tried to straighten the hair, the more they got wrinkled. Never-ending-work. Peki got tired and went away to wherever-from she came. She never returned to Surana's house and pestered them.

Wherefrom and how I got this story

In the year 1961-62, I was studying VII Standard at Municipal High School (Branch), Bapatla. We had to study two non-details Texts in Telugu. One Text dealt with Pingali Surana's Biography . From there I got this story. It was a Private Publisher text book, not Govt. of Andhra Pradesh text book. But, I forgot author's name. My readers, if they are very curious to study Pingali Surana's Biography, they can google, particularly at Archive.org.

What is so extra-ordinary about Surana?

He wrote a book named "Raghava abhyudayam". Every verse in the book, comes up with two meanings. 1. From Ramayana side, Rama's story. 2. From Mahabharata's side, story of Pandavas.
In no other language in the world (to the best of my knowledge), we can find this feat. Writing a single verse following the needed meter (prosody, Telugu: chandasu), with two meanings is extremely difficult. Suarana narrated two Epics, Ramayana and Mahabharat, in each verse.

Now, our Gauprama2019-24 has made us objects of Covid 19, first Wave and Second Wave. The great Telugu poeta Pingali Surana lived in the 16th Century.  महाकवी पिंगळि सूरना, १६ शताब्दी में जीवित थे।  మహాకవి పింగళి సూరన  16వ శతాబ్దంలో జీవించారు.

Many people believe that he was one among the eight great elephants (eight poets in the court of the Vijayanagara King Srikrishna Deva Raya, were compared to the legendary eight great elephants which carry the burden of this world (as per Indian beliefs). कई लोग विश्वास करते हैं कि, पिंगळि सूरना महाकवि वर, विजय नगर के चक्रवर्ती श्रीकृष्ण देव रायलु के आस्थान में उपस्थित अष्ट दिग्गज कवियों में एक थे।  పింగళి సూరన మహాకవి, విజయనగర చక్రవర్తి అయిన శ్రీకృష్టదేవరాయల ఆస్థానంలోని  అష్టదిగ్గజాల్లో ఒకడు అని, పలువురి విశ్వాసం.

Probably, Pingali Surana entered the court of Sri Krishna Deva Raya very late, during the last years of Krishna Deva Raya's rule.  At that time, Pingali Surana might have been a very young poet.  शायद, पिंगळी सूरना महाकवि वर, कृष्ण देव राय के पालन के आखरी दिनों में उन के दरबार में उपविष्ठ हुआ होगा।  संभवतः श्री कृष्ण देव राय के दरबार में प्रवेशित होने के अवसर पर, वे अपने यौवन दशा में रहे होगा।

Prosody Mattebha (Elephant in heat) मत्तेभ छंद మత్తేభ వృత్తం 

వలకేల దాపలికిం గుచ స్తబక సేవాలోలతం బోవ డాఁ
పలికేల్  సిగ్గున మాన్ప నల్క నది తత్పార్శ్వంపు లేఁజెక్కుఁ గో
మల పాదంబును ముట్టుచున్ వలచు బ్రహ్మంబ ర్ధనారీశ్వరుం
డెలమిన్ నిత్యము బ్రోచుఁ గృష్ణ వసుధాధీశున్ నృసింహాత్మజున్.

valakEla dApalikim kuca stabaka sEvA lOlatam pOvaDA-
palikEl sigguna mAnpan alkan adi tat pArSvampu lE cekku kO-
mala pAdambunu muTTucun valacu brahmambu ardha nArSvarum-
Delamin nityamu brOcu krishNa vasudhAdhISun nrisimhAtmajun.

Purport-gist-synopsis:

The poet is blessing the king krishNa vasudhAdhISa (i.e. 16th Century Vijayanagara king Krishna Deva Raya s/o Nrisimha).  The poet's aim is that Lord Shiva should protect the king.  Lord Shiva, was visualised in this verse, in the form of Ardha nArIsvara.   Unlike in Western culture which visualises God only as male Yehova or Alla, the versatile Indian culture (I call this HindUtva) visualises God as Father, Mother, and a combined form of both.  artha = half.  nAri = woman.  Isvara = God.  tatvam = philosophy.  ardha-nArIsvara-tatvam = A philosophical concept which views God as a combined form of father-and-mother.  In the right half of the form, is the father or male side.   In the left hand side is the mother form i.e. the female side.



The Great poet has taken this concept of ardhanArISvara to greater lengths.  He visualised that Siva's right hand was trying to caress his left breast (which belongs to Mother Parvati).   Now, the left half containing the female hand has tried to discourage the right hand from taking excess freedom.  Then as a genuine loving hand, the right hand has tried to touch his own delicate female feet (i.e. Parvati's portion) to assuage her.  The poet is now praying the Lord in this great affectionate (Telugu word elamin used in the fourth line of the verse), is to bless the king.


About KIng Krishna referred to in this verse:  There is a view that he was not Vijayanagara King SrikrishNa dEva rAya who passed away in 1530CE.  It was the king Nandyala KrishNam rAju, king of Nandyal, and was dedicated in 1560CE.   Source VAviLLa Ramasastry & Sons Published Edition.   Besides, Krishna Deva RAyalu's father seems to be TuLuva Narasa RAyalu, and not Narasimha RAyalu, as mentioned in the above verse.

यह पिंगळि सूरना महाकवी प्रणीत कळापूर्णोदय काव्य के पीठिका ३ नंबर पद्य है।

तात्तपर्य
महाकवी अपने कळापूर्णोदय काव्य को आंध्र प्रदेश के, कर्नूल जिले नंद्याल के प्रभू नंद्याल कृष्णं राजु को अंकित दिये।  महाकवी भगवान महादेव को प्रार्धना कर रहा था कि, वह अपने अर्धनारीश्वर रूप में राजा क्रिष्ण को रक्षा करना।

अर्धनारीश्वर महेश्वर को प्रार्धना करते समय महाकवि एक अदभुत भावना को स्मरण किया।  अर्धनारीश्वर के दक्षिण पार्श्व शंकर के है।  दक्षिण हस्त भी शंकर के होता है।  वाम पार्श्व में माता पार्वती है।  उसकी हस्त वाम भाग में है। 

सेवा भाव में, प्रेम से, परमेश्वर के दक्षिण हस्त माता पार्वती की कुच पर जा रहा है।  माता पार्वती ने शरम से ईश्वर के दक्षिण हाथ को नियंत्रण की।  फिर, ईश्वर के दक्षिण हाथ, थोडा मचलते हुए, माता पार्वती के सुललित सुंदर पावँ को प्यार से पकडने के अवसर पर, अर्धनारीश्वर परब्रह्मस्वरूप (ब्रह्मंबु पद देखीये) महाकवी के कृती भर्ता नंद्याल कृष्णं राजु को रक्षा करना।

ఈ పద్యం పింగళి సూరనాచార్య ప్రణీత కళాపూర్ణోదయ కావ్య భూమిక లోనిది.  మహాకవి, తన కావ్య గ్రహీత (లేక కావ్య భర్త) అయిన శ్రీకృష్ణ దేవరాయలుని కీర్తిస్తున్నాడు.  నృసింహాత్మజున్ అంటే నృసింహదేవరాయల గారి అబ్బాయి.   ఇక్కడ మహాకవి దీవెన ఏమిటంటే, అర్ధనారీశ్వరుడైన ఈశ్వరుడు, కృతిభర్త అయిన మహారాజుని బ్రోచు అంటే రక్షించుగాక, అని.  అదికూడమామూలుగా కాదు, ఎలమిన్ నిత్యము.  ఇవి రెండూ క్రియా విశేషణాలు.

వలకేలు అంటే కుడి చేయి.  అర్ధనారీశ్వరుడి కుడివైపు ఈశ్వరుడు ఉంటాడు.  ఎడమవైపు పార్వతి ఉంటుంది.  కాబట్టి, కుడి చేతులన్నీ శివుడివి అని మనం అనుకోవచ్చు.  ఎడమ చేతులన్నీ పార్వతివి అనచ్చు.

స్తబకం పదానికి రూఢి అర్ధం పూగుత్తి, గుఛ్ఛం.  గ్రంధాలలో  'భాగం' (స్కంధం లాగా) అనే అర్ధం తరువాత వచ్చినట్లు కనిపిస్తుంది. కుచ స్తబకం అనే దానికి అర్ధం నాకు స్పష్టంగా తెలియదు.  స్తనముల గుఛ్ఛము లేక స్తనముల పై ఉన్న పుష్పగుఛ్ఛము వంటి అర్ధాలను తీసుకోవచ్చేమో.  తెలియని దానిపై వ్యాఖ్యానించ దలుచుకోలేదు.

ఏది  ఏమైనా కుడి చేయి అయిన ఈశ్వర హస్తం  మాతాపార్వతి కుచస్తబకం పై సేవార్ధం చేయి వేయబోగా, దానిని  డాపలి చేయి (ఎడమచేయి) అయిన పార్వతి హస్తం సిగ్గుతో వారించింది.  అపుడు దక్షిణ హస్తం అలుక చెంది, ఎడమవైపు ఉన్న పార్వతి  లేలేత కోమల పాదాన్ని  సృశించబోయింది.  ఇక్కడ బ్రహ్మంబు పదం, ఈశ్వరుడు పరబ్రహ్మమూర్తి అనే భావానికి సంకేతం కావచ్చు.  ఆబ్రహ్మమే అర్ధనారీశ్వరుడు.

☛ఒప్పుగా వామకరము ఒగిచాచి వలకేల కొప్పు కడునెత్తినాడు గోవిందరాజు ఇప్పుడు శ్రీవేంకటాద్రి నిరవై శంఖుచక్రాల కుప్పె కటారము(లు) పట్టె గోవిందరాజు.  ఇది అన్నమాచార్యుల వారి ప్రయోగం.

☛గృష్ణుండు దా నమ్మహా శైలంబున్ వలకేల దాల్చి విపులచ్ఛత్త్రంబుగా బట్టె నా భీలాభ్రచ్యుత దుశ్శిలాచకిత గోపీగోప గోపంక్తికిన్!  ఇది పోతన్నగారి ప్రయోగం.

All humans are, from the point of view of anthropology and zoology, ardhnarIswaras (hermaphrodites) i.e. having two sexes in one body.  मानव शास्त्र और जंतु शास्त्र दृष्टिकोण से हर एक मानव अर्धनारीश्वर होता -होते-होती है।  मतलब यह है कि एक ही शरीर में दो लिंग बसनेवाला है।  మానవ శాస్త్ర ప్రకారం, జంతుశాస్త్ర ప్రకారం ప్రతి మానవుడు (మానవతి) కూడ ద్విలింగుడు (లేక ద్విలింగవతి) యే.  అంటే ఏక శరీరంలో రెండు లింగాలూ ఉంటాయి.

Men may, in addition to, behaving like males, sometimes may behave like women.  Similarly females may, in addition to behaving like females, sometimes may behave like males.  In other words occasional hybrid behaviors.  मर्द में पुरुष सहज व्यवहार के अतिरिक्त कभी कभी औरत जैसे व्यवहार करना।  औरतें , स्त्री सहज व्यवहार के अतिरिक्त, कभी कभी पूरुष के जैसे व्यवहार करना। మగవాళ్ళు, పురుషుల వలెనే కాక, అప్పుడప్పుడు స్త్రీలవలె కూడ వ్యవహరించటం మనం చూడచ్చు.  స్త్రీలు, సహజంగా స్త్రీల వలెనే కాక, అదనంగా అప్పుడప్పుడు పురుషులవలె ప్రవర్తించటాన్ని మనం చూడచ్చు.

One big difference between narrow alien religions and the indigenous Indian Religions, including Indian Hinduism, Indian Christianity and Indian Islam.   विदेशी संकुचित धर्मो और भारतीय धर्मो के मध्य एक बडा फरक यह है कि।  ఇరుకైన విదేశీమతాలకు, భారతీయ మతాలకూ ఉన్న ఒక పెద్ద తేడా

Indian religions tend to be broader, deeper, flexible and accommodative.  भारतीय धर्म विस्तृत, गहरा, लचीला-मुलायम-नम्य, अनुग्राही और उदार रहते हैं।  భారతీయ మతాలు విస్తృతం, లోతుగా, సర్దుబాటు తత్వం కలిగి, ఉంటాయి.

Though Indian religions have this breadth, depth, flexibility, accommodative nature, many Indians become dogmatic and fanatics because they do not know what their religions actually contain.  भारतीय धर्मों में विस्तृती, गहराई, नम्यता, उदारशीलता ये सब रहने तो भी, भारतीय धर्म हठी, दुराग्रही बन जाते-- क्यों कि अपने धर्मों में क्या क्या हैँ, उनको विस्तृत, गहराई, रूप से नहीं जानकारी नहीं है।  భారతీయ మతాలలో విస్తృతి, లోతు, సర్దుబాటు ధోరణి, ఇవన్నీ ఉన్నప్పటికీ, చాల మంది భారతీయులు తీవ్రమతావేశ పరులుగానూ, మత అసహనత కలవారు గానూ తయారు కావటానికి ముఖ్యకారణం తమ తమ మతాల్లో ఏముందో వారికి తెలియకపోవటం.
