Arthritis is more of a health threat to most Indians than lifestyle diseases like diabetes. A recent study found that nearly 18 crore people were likely to develop Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) and other forms of the condition which affects the joints of the body.

This study was carried out over a period of three years by a diagnostic lab across India, according to the Asian Age. With the help of advanced radiology tests, clinicians found that 10.14 percent of those surveyed showed positive for RA. To add to that, 21.74 percent of the samples tested showed the presence of anti-nuclear antibodies. This meant that their immune system might be predisposed to cause inflammation against their own body tissues. Arthritis India lists this as one of the main cause for RA, according to the survey report.

Doctors classify arthritis into three main clinical types: Osteoarthritis (OA), Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) and Gout. The most commonly affected places in RA happen to be the joint cartilages and membranes.

1. Diabetes, is inter alia (along with others) other reasons, also caused by excess sugar consumption, which when not converted by liver to fat cells, causing the release of sugar into blood stream. In AyurvEda , the traditional healing science of India, sugar is the main contributor of madhura rasam which is one of the six tastes (shaD rasams) which govern our food and our health. Excess intake of madhura rasam is a contributor to Aama vAta and joint pains, according to INdian traditions of healing. Thus there is a link among consumption of sweet taste, diabetes and arthritis.

Unfortunately, individuals and institutions often look only from their own point of view, and do not show much concern about holistic effects. Hence, Arthritis India seems to be viewing only from Arthritis, Immunity System, etc. angles, and apparently not giving importance to diabetes and madhura rasam (sweet taste). All the three are concomitant with one another and are good friends. Hence, any person who wants to guard himself against arthritis will have to also guard himself against diabetes (and vice versa i.e. to guard against diabetes, includes guarding against arthritis also). They are not mutually exclusive.

At the same time, we cannot starve ourselves by total abstinence from sweet taste. We get most of our calories (energy) from sweet rasa (taste). Even rice contains madhura rasa, though may be a lesser percentage, when compared to sugars and sweets. Most grasses (includes wheat, jowar, bajra, maize) contain sugars.

Another friend of "madhura rasa" in raising vAta in body, is "tikta rasa (bitter taste)". It is strange that Ayurvedic physicians consider bitter gourd (karElA in Hindi and kAkara in Telugu) as a herbal remedy for diabetes. As kAkara's tikta rasa is a friend of sugar's madhura rasa, in raising vAta dOsha, at least theoretically, we have to concede that bitter-gourd is apathya (taboo-food) for diabetes patients. I am just pointing out this paradox. Only Ayurveda experts (I am not) can explain this paradox.

The opposites of madhura rasa are lavaNa rasa (salt taste) and kaTu rasa (hot taste). kaTu rasa causes thirst and a feeling of heating in body. Then madhura rasa (sweet taste of grasses including sugar cane) becomes an antidote. This may be the reason for people eating some hot savories like boondi with salt and hot tastes, after consuming boondi laDDus of sweet tastes.

Another example, we can see in jaundice (kAmela in Hindi. kAmerlu or pasikarlu in Telugu, a sort of Hepatitis B). Many allopathic doctors advise patients to take more glucose, unless the patients suffer from diabetes. Glucose is madhura rasa. It is not clear how kaTu, kashAya, lavaNa rasAs cause inflammation to liver. But according to Ayurveda, jaundice patients have to avoid hot, salty, astringent substances.

Another observation which comes to a lay ignorant person like me is: dOsha kshINata vs. dOsha prakOpa (Fall of the three dOshas vs. Aggravation of the three dOshas). This I experienced in the year 1990 when I suffered from a bout of jaundice.

First I had fever. Then, advised by friends, I consulted an allopath. He identified the fever as malaria and gave me the usual quota of four or five varieties of tablets. Then it subsided.

After a month I had jaundice, which I believed was caused by the contamination of drinking water with drain water, of our Great Vijayawada City, which our Greater Chandra Babu Naidu wants to make World Class. Besides, unable to resist my jihvA cApalyam (tongue's whims and fancies), I consumed some heavily spiced vegetable kUrmas served in Vijayawada restaurants with chapAtIs and parOThas. These spicy foods tend to be filled with excess kaTu rasa (hot taste), particularly with cakkA (dalchin), lavangAlu (cloves)d, and also sometimes excess lavaNa rasa (salt taste). Definitely, they do not contain madhura rasa.

kaTu and lavaNa rasas seem to have a tendency to cause itching of skin, which is one symptom of jaundice.

As per the advice of friends during the jaundice period of 26 days + another one month margin of safety, I took lot of coconut water, butter milk and glucose. All these substances are reputed as coolants with madhura rasa domination. Soon I had a bout of vAta fever. As friends and relatives were pressing me to go to an allopath, I consulted an allpathic doctor. Though he identified the fever as malaria, prescribed a half-a-dozen number of drugs. One lesson from this experience is, taking an opposite curative rasa beyond moderation, out of overzealousness to get cured, also seems to be counter-productive.
